katana motor in gs?

besides mounting brackets any ideas on how hard it would be to throw a gsxf 600 katana motor in a gs500? im thinking that the motor might be off a little to one side to line up with the chain and maybe diff chain size. does that kill the idea, does any other problems kill the idea? just a thought as my 89 gs500e motor has pretty much bit the dust.

I would have got a Katana if the insurance was not $1100 compared to $411.

lol look, stuff that you are talking about just isnt worth ... your only hope to beat the insurance system is to get a from the past 500cc two stroke racers which can whip 600s... but you will be paying out the ass for it.

I am a drag racer at heart and have owned many, many cars, and trucks.

I have had a few different cars and trucks that had a motor swaps done.

88 Ford ranger 302 C4 auto.  75 mustang with roller 302 AOD then switched to 5 speed.  Around where I live the only thing the insurance companies look at is if is street legal, clean/salvage title, and if it is used as a track vehicle.  Some companies will not full coverage on a salvage title vehicle

As far as the drag old drag bikes go......  there plain looking.  I like the flashy look of the full fairings.  I was a big fan of the sport bikes back in the 80's when the Katanas, Hurricanes, FZRs, Ninjas became popular.  It is the style I like.

Jazzzz  The other day I was coming home from a birthday party and my wife was following me in my Neon.  My Speedo said a little over 110.  She said she was only going about 105 and she went around pretty quick.  I felt like crap after that.  She then got her car (04 Civic Ex) and set the cruise at 55, I was at 61-62 mph to pace right behind her.  At her 65 mph I was well into the 70's.  At that rate when I was doing 100 indicated I figure somewhere around 89-90 mph.

Before I bought the GS I was cruising this forum and everybody on here said it would be a great starter bike.

What I now know is it would be a great starter bike for someone 175 lbs or lighter.  Over that weight limit a 60 to 85 hp bike would be ideal for a starter.

You're complaining that the GS won't do much over 100, and saying that you're a drag racer at heart, and that makes it a bad "starter bike?" That's kinda self-contradictory...

I also question the wisdom of talking smack about the GS on GS-oriented boards...  

In any event why don't you just sell the GS (it's perennially in demand) and trade up? The whole point of a starter bike is that you don't ride it forever.

Big heavy people  =   :nana: blow me!.....I'm 212 now and 6 ft tall  ?  Is that now considered BIG?   BTW I have lost 8 lbs in a little under 2 weeks :mrgreen:

Talking smack......  I never said it was a bad starter bike for everyone, just for people over 175 lbs.  For me I'm just used to faster cars( Mustangs, Firebirds, V8's and Turbo I4's) I just figured the bike would be faster?  Maybe the looks of the GS F models kind of fooled me.

As far as selling my GS, nobody around here wants one, and a couple local shops will not take it in on trade because of the low demand for one and I'm not going to practically give it away.

Don't get me wrong I love the way it handles but I feel I out grown or gotten used to the bike in 5 months?  Anybody else feel this way?  I used to ride ATV's (ran a couple scrambles in utility class and did better than some of the sport quads) and a few dirt bikes so I was not a complete noobie when I bought the GS.

back to what this thread is suppose to be about, financially it isnt worth the time and effort to fit in a katana motor in a gs from if its doable at all...i mean it would be cheaper to bore out the lil gs and opt up for new exhaust and a sprocket swap, even that may not be financially sound, after all you are complaining about not wanting to pay the extra insurance but researching into $1000+ experiments that may not even work out... heres the key, your gs is high on insurance because its a 2004, anything older than two years has a huge comprehensive drop in price, (theft coverage) goes down, statistically newer bikes are stolen more often, so if you want a fast bike with cheaper insurance and dont even want to pay alot for the fast bike, do what I did and purchase a clean titled wrecked crotch rocket, rebuild it yourself and enjoy the cheaper insurance because its a 2003 model or below..wait long enough and you can get a 2004 supersport with cheap insurance...

You seem to know about engines and the like, more than I do anyway. So it's strange that you sound almost deceived about the GS. The specs are easily available... 37 hp, I think ~25 ft-lbs of torque, 0-60 in ~5.5 seconds, 350 lbs dry, probably about 600 lbs with you or me on it, etc. It should be pretty easy to compare the power/weight ratio to some of your cars or ATVs and guess what the performance would be like.

That sucks. Around here people seem to love the GS -- you could put it up on craigslist and get top dollar in a matter of days. But it totally depends on what the local market is like. I don't know nuthin' about selling bikes, so can't help you there...

start working on the gs engine...you can get a lot more power...i think you can bore it out to 650 cc with busa pistons...not sure though
work on the carbs, mill the head a little for more compression...port and polish...things like that
