no your a hick all right.  back before they had the red/orange twine they had hemp, and before that they used actuall metal wire.

I guess i had no idea cause my farm went from loose hay, to hemp bound bales, to Ag-Bagged haylage and wrapped round bales   I'm jus a youngin anyway so what do i know?

Now this is a hay bale! Its as wide as an f450 bed and about 5x's higher....that was not fun pitching I did it all by hand

Baling Wire 101

Back in the olden days of dairy farming (pre-1975 or so)....
hay was cut in the field and left laying in rows....

hay baling machines were pulled behind a tractor, scooping up the hay at the front of the machine, compressing it into a rectangular block, and binding it with thin cheap wire from a spool, the bale was then dropped out the back onto the ground....

the blocks of hay were about 3'X1.5'x2' (my memory fades) and depending on how long the hay had dried, weighed around 50-75 lbs each.(just heavy enough for a young farm hand to lift and throw)....

manpower, not a front end loader, was used to pick up each bale where is was stacked on a trailer, taken to a barn, and restacked for winter feeding....(I got $0.07 per bale)

the baling wire used for miscellaneous projects came from the stack of old wire left over when the hay bales were consumed.

Baling wire....wind it tight , twist lock it, coat it with epoxy!  stronger than steel.

lets see, zip ties, duct tape, spool wire (like bailing wire but thiner) aluminum strips, JB weld, and welding with both arc machine and oxyace with wire coathangers. OH yeah, PVC/ABS glue too.
