oops youll need a new one of them

was riding around today and heard a clanking sound.  damn flange had worked loose,  can was hitting the rear caliper.  went home and got out the welder to tack it in place,  forgot to disconnect the battery.  so I tacked it in place,  pulled off the header,  welded it all the way around,  reinstalled the exhaust.  pulled it out of the garage for ride,  turned on the key and no lights,  no click no nothing..  now off to buy a new battery!!  damit :x  :x  :x  :x  :x

I put the charger on it it seems to be taking a charge,  maybe it will be alright  :dunno: .  roll started it a little bit ago and went for a 20 minute ride.  the rejet , filter, exhaust, and valve clearance corrected make it so much more fun to ride (pulls the front wheel about a foot when I hit second).

no it was really tight going on I think it just wiggled around enough to loosen up.   its ok now that it is welded,  I'll have to wait for morning to see if the battery is going to be ok ( I doubt it but it never hurts to try)

It seems odd that flange worked itself loose.  How tight was the strap on the exhaust?  Maybe that was the culprit.  I can tell you mine is still solid as it was the day I installed it (knock on wood ;))

Forgive me; i'm a noob when it comes to welding, but why would the battery need disconnecting?

but if you send me the original, i can do a high-rez resize of it and make you a shiny avatar with the same dimensions (look at borders on pic, they look jagged).

Avatars are supposed to be under 10K...  The smallest hi-res one (that didn't look awful) was about 20k... :dunno:

You are using electrical current to create the high temperatures for the welding. Leaving the battery connected (which is grounded to the frame) can overload various components of the bike's electrical system.

Well its nice to know this ... now ... I always leave crap on it and weld it ... other than stuff hitting the hot metal and melting ... nothing has happened ... knock on wood ... Including Cheesy/tarzanBoy's bike ... Maybe your ground was in the wrong spot ... like frame. I usually clip to the exhaust if hitting exhaust ... hell by that token jetswings and my 89 should have a fried electrical system ... OK jetswings doesn't have any to speak of ... but mine did ... and never had a blip ...

charged the battery over night,  it seems to be ok.  only time will tell.   usually welding with the battery connected willnot cause any problems.  But in my haste to fix the exhaust, I left the ignition turned on.  the ground for the welder was connected to the exhaust,  but welding still puts incredible amounts of electricity into the entire bike,  with the ignition on it also went threw the entire electrical system.  Im lucky I didn't burn up anything else.  so in the future,  be safe and disconnect the battery.  While working on race cars (quick repairs/welds while car is still runnning) I have seen batteries exploded from the high voltage (not like KABOOM but sides split and acid runs out).  so better to be safe then sorry
