That could have been it. Some robots try to post to phpBB boards; a few even try to register, then post to every thread, etc. I'm sure there are some broken bots out there that could tie-up a board.

No, it isn't them. It's probably an attack of some sort. I'm trying to find the IP so I can block it. Till then the board will go up and down.

You might want to reply to the ticket and tell them it looks like an attack instead of a problem.

OK, well I blocked the ip for the offending guest viewer. This may, or may not, solve the problem. It seems other boards with similar issues ended up requiring a user/pass in order to view the forum. I don't want to resort to this extreme, but may have to if the problem persists.

The attacking ip is: 212.42.96.2 (http://www.elcat.kg/) from some eastern block country. I banned all from access from 212.42.96.* through 212.42.100.* I hope it works. This is the the total pool of IP's this isp owns. This should work till the next time there is an attack

Oh good, I was hoping it wasn't me. I'm not very computer literate, so everytime I get one of those Php errors when I click on the GStwin link in my Favorites dropdown box, I think I did something.

Did you make a "robots.txt" file at the root of the site? I did that on my HTTP server, and it seems to block a lot of the bots and things from places I'd like protected.

Of course, I think whether or not the bot-user wants to listen to the entries in that robots.txt file is their call, so it won't stop malicious stuff.
