bling!

i think you're right, it looks like a crank case vent.

ps. I'd be interested in taking a ride sometime. Maybe we could meet somewhere in the middle, that'd put us in some nice territory.

Well Im not sure why its needed, the stock one seems to work ok so why add another, plus with another vent you are lowering the internal pressure of the crank case so such things as the wrist pins might not have as much oil mist to lubricate them.

looks like more money's been spent blinging that bike up than the bike's worth -- that's like putting $2000 worth of chrome wheels on a $500 mid-80's Caprice

It is a crankcase vent. That is where the crankcase would vent into the airbox via a tube on the '77+ GS450's.

To some, the bike as a whole is worth more than the sum of its parts. If one person values one thing at $500, then it is only worth $500 to that person. But, to another, it may be the only thing they own and they may value it more than the other person. Also, I see that he polished the cases, which only costs time. I would honor the amount of effort he put into it.

It's not really necessary. I guess he did it to dress up an otherwise boring, blank spot on the engine.  The primary breather is located on top of the head where oil can't slosh out like it could on the case. It also allows fumes and vapors to escape better.
The GS doesn't produce enough internal pressure to lose all that much power. But you can get a little bit by installing a PCV (one way) valve in the crankcase vent to create a partial vacumm.

No, Cadillac is. Caprice is just a full size rearwheel drive GM that ISNT a truck/Van.   too bad they are gone, i liked them, i liked the older 2 door Impala better though.
