Oh man, that's a fireblade. It is an awsome bike but "starter" it aint. On Sat 20th and Sun 21st we have a visit from the "Honda Roadshow" at a local dealership with a cafe and huge parking lot, it is a great weekend with loads of demo bikes to ride and all kind of events. If it's anything like the last one there will be a day-long wait to ride the fireblade (now CBR1000RR) and they won't let you near it if you haven't got a couple of years experience, and they are RIGHT!

that's a common way of thinking. When I bought my gs500 a guy that worked next door (who rode a cbr900rr) said I should have at least bought a 600. that I'd be bored with it in weeks. Turned out, his idea of riding was doign wheelies and burnouts...idiot.

I'll tell you what!

Now in all honesty with the terrain here in South GA I can understand how someone would get "bored" with our beloved little GS.  Everything is flat and straight (kinda like Kansas), and if I were a new rider, riding with more experienced guys who were all on 600 or bigger SS bikes I would feel intimidated and highly pressured to get a "fast" bike.  That's cause unless you tour or ride a cruiser around here bikes go fast in a straight line and that's all you need to know.  Let's be fair and take into consideration that a LOT of guys start on 600ss bikes and don't kill themselves.


Now that being said...


This guy is retarded!  These 600ss bikes are not starter bikes, and the 1L bikes are WAY worse!!!!!!  

To any noobs reading this,
The GS500 has round about 40 HP, and it weighs round 400 lbs.  That is a 10:1 power to weight ratio.  This means that it is pretty durn fast, and you can do ALL legal street riding better/easier/safer on one of these than on an SS.  It is THE BEST IDEA to get a 'small' inexpensive bike to START with.  Get a couple or three oil changes (10k miles is a good idea) under your belt before you even THINK about getting a faster bigger heavier bike.  I hate that I'm saying this, but cruisers under 883cc are GREAT starter bikes.  Power is always there cause they're tuned for torque, but it isn't so much power that the bike will easily get away from you.  They have a low center of gravity, and a low seat which makes low speed maneuvering easier.  Cruiser riders tend to be much more concerned with how you and your bike look than doing wheelies/burnouts or how fast you can get to 120mph, so peer pressure is less likely to get you in WAY over your head.

Now I want to compliment the readers and writers on this board.  This board and these people are more than enough reason to ride a GS.  You are very helpful, and give VERY reasonable and good advice.  You are very safety-oriented, which is a VERY good influence for all riders, not just new ones.  So, much love to all (I'm not sure why I'm getting mushy)

The guy who sold me my GS with 0 miles on it told me the exact same thing. That was in 2002.

I can not believe that people still think that big cc's or big ci's means good bike /car.
It's not the size that matters (oops that's a woman thing).
It's the power to weight ratio, how the machine is geared and most import the operator. Give a young inexperanced rider a big bike and sure he can wheelie, give the same rider a gs and i bet he/she could not get the front wheel off the pavement. give a gs to a wiser rider and watch magic happen. The more I ride my gs...I have had bigger bikes... the more I have wished I had started with this bike. I have re-learned how to ride and have become a safer rider because of this Gs.

I'm a somewhat new rider, on the street at least.  I love the gs, its my 1st bike.  it handles very well, its fast but not too fast.  An older friend of mine who rides, made a really good point, he used to race porsches, and they were alle the same, so you learn to be a better driver.  This translates to riding, if I tune my riding skills and become even better, and i can keep w/ bigger bikes, then when I'm ready for one, they'll have the trouble keeping up w/ me.  Besides, my gs pulls wheelies just fine.

Yeah, but compared to most cruisers out there, which were mentioned earlier as well... also, the ergos of the GS and the wide handlebars make turning a fairly easy affair. Low speed handling is MUCH better compared to some of the competitor's bike (EX500 Ninja, for example, is very frustrating to handle at slow speeds. Not very comforting on a "beginner bike.")

That's an understatement. EX500 Engine has more top end than a GS though. But that's because it's a liquid-cooled 4-valve per cylinder engine. Makes it a pain in the ass job (and expensive!) to do valve adjustments though!
