Where do you guys put your helmets on the GS500?

pantablo

remove the seat and there's a hook you can strap the D-ring of the helmet to. Then when you reinstall the seat it acts as a lock. Best to bring it with you-never know when someone will use it for a trash can (or worse, a urinal)...

Where do you put it when you mount the bike?  it takes few mins for bike to warm up so i dont put it on when i mount the bike so i hang it on my mirrors.  Sometimes they slip off.  My brand new helmat already has scratches and dings on it  :(

on my head when i mount the bike

bbanjo

When it's hot, it's sitting on my tank bag on the bike (dampens the vibes so it doesn't hit the dirt). When it's cold it's on my noggin.

I have three children, all 6 and under, to treat my helmet like a biatch so I'm careful with it.

No time to wash the bike

Roadstergal

I wear it or carry it.  If the bike's between my legs, the helmet is on my head.

calamari

...
i make gf carry it for me until I mount her... (the bike of course).
Caturday yet?

xtalman

I rest the helmet on the left-side passenger footpeg when I'm putting my gloves on.

So you guys put your gloves on first, then thread your helmet strap through the binding?  You guys have full-finger gloves? You must have better dexterity than I do.

Sometimes I turn the handlebars completely to the left and lock them there.  Then I hang the helmet on the right handlebar.

Other times I set it on the ground by the front wheel.

I never don or remove the helmet while on the bike.  If I'm on the bike, the helmet is on my head.

If your helmet has fallen from the mirror to hard pavement, even once, you may want to consider getting a new one.  Helmets are designed to absorb one impact only.    :(

The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

Not necessarily.  The helmet is designed to absorb the energy from an external impact against your skull - ie. your head and whatever you're hitting it with smushes the energy absorbing material inside the helmet.  This material is, as you've correctly said, for one time use only.  But, without your head inside, a drop doesn't really affect it.  It is possible that the shell or the bond between the layers inside the helmet could be damaged, but the impact absorbing capability is likely fine.

One of the mags did a test on this in the last year or two.  They dropped helmets from increasing heights, starting around 3' and going up over 10', then tested them to see if they still worked.  Turns out they worked just fine, even after the 10' drops.

ps.  It can still be a valid concern, it's your head afterall  ;)   If you're worried, some manufacturers will check your helmet out for no charge.  Shoei I know does it.

davipu

that's why when you put it on the mirror, you put the mirror through the face shield hole.

jake42

i just put it on as i'm walking out of the garage.  that's why it has lots of little white streaks from me scraping it on my garage door.

I just put the helmet on the ground and then pick it up. How hard is that.

I agree.

I never understand why people put their helmet on the seat or tank. It cannot fall it is already on the ground. If there is a little dirt, it brushes off easily.
Common sense in not very common.
