What part of riding/driving really gets you in the gut?

I let a professor of mine, a former MSF instructor, take my GS around the empty parking lot by her office for a quick lap, and when she came back she offered to let me take her Hawk GT around.  I told her I wasn't comfortrable enough to ride other people's bikes yet, but asked her to fire it up so I could hear it.  GAWD that V-Twin sound was nice.  Rather than sounding like a sewing machine on steriods a la the GS, it sounded like an honest-to-goodness motor.  It had a sexy purr with just a hint of the lumpy idle that HDs are famous for, that potato-potato sound.

Sound is a visceral part of the motoring experience for me; the biggest reasons I replaced the exhaust on my GS were that 1) the stocker was a bit quiet for my tastes (the V&H is a bit too far in the other direction, but oh well) and 2) I hated that the motor sounds like the Singer my mom keeps in the spare bedroom, and was hoping to drown it out.  I've always been a fan of the grumble of a big V8 with a de-restricted exhaust.  A lot of folk these days are really into the scream of an I-4 with forced induction, the sound of a turbo spooling or a blow-off valve venting to atmosphere, etc.  Other people really enjoy the smell of racing fuel or a leather interior.  Some like the feel of a shifter notching into gear.  Obviously, there are a lot of people who enjoy the adrenaline rush from going really, really fast.  What is it about driving that provides you with the most enjoyment?

I love getting out on an open backroad with nothing but road ahead and sunshine.  The feeling of freedom, and like me, the GS, and the road are what the universe revolves around.  That's my favorite part of riding.

I like the wind in my face. A lot of times if I am just cruising down the straights, I'll flip up my face sheild and enjoy the fresh blasts of air.  :thumb:
Richard died in a motorcycle accident that was at no fault of his own.  We lost a good friend and good member of this board.  Though Rich may be gone, his legacy will live on here.

my favorite part is not having to talk to anyone, or listen to other people talk on their cellphones.

oh yeah and the twisties through the park on my way to and from work.

JakeD-getting your nipple pierced is not crazy. Killing a drifter to get an errection? Now that's crazy!

It's more about the feel than the sound for me...  I love being scooted back in my seat and having to hang on tight.

The sound helps too...  Even the GS at 10K sounds pretty bad ass if you ask me.......  But, I liked the sound of my bug too...  Especially after I broke off the exhaust.

It is the feel of the wind hitting me when I am attacking the twisties.  The occational high protein snack is just an added bonus

Cheap gas, cheap insurance, cheap bike, car pool use, the free parking and the fact that I can fix it myself ... and 10 years and 40K miles later ... i dont take a bath selling it ... I have over 100K on bikes so far, and have not ever been let down by one ... OK I've never been let down by a car either ... but I am talking cheap as shiete bikes that have been neglected for years VS new and $$$ cars ... Anyway ... old tech, reliable as a rock ... bike are my favorite ...
Cool.

I like cornering and acceleration.  I've had three Camaros over 13 years, and the cornering in a car doesn't provide the thrill that it used to (in fact, cornering in anything but a sports car is just boring   , but on the GS, cornering is fun again.  :thumb:
Something is wrong with my twin...all of a sudden it's V shaped!  Wait, no, now it's a triple!  ...and I IZ NOT a postwhore!

i love the moments of complete concentration on what i'm doing and nothing else.  whether its riding through the twisties all by myself or merging into traffic for the morning commute, i get those moments every time i'm on the bike.

I love battling NYC traffic. It's fun, especially when you are playing with another rider. Other notables- being able to get home in the same amount of time regardless of traffic conditions.

Sidenote- I also ride a Hawk GT (See My Myspace) Love It :thumb:

the game of kickstand/killswitch tag.  tons of fun, but I whouldn't recommend it in traffic.

no really, you get about 6 bikes and start playing. it's like regular tag only to tag the person you have to kill their motor either by the kickstand or toe kill switch.

How's it work?

Why?

trigger the kickstand killswitch by pressing it with your toe
