Well after sitting for over a year I finally got the 96 going.  New carbs, jets, headlights, Pingel fuel valve, lines, brake fluid, and painted the front caliper gold, will do the rear this winter.  She started right up after I got the idle screw turned the right way.  I think this winter I'll get the new chain and sprockets on, and work on the paint job.  I'll post pics when I get a chance(cameras in the shop).  Thanks to everyone on the site for making the info I needed to get up and running again.

Can't.  Something is wrong with the carbs.  If I slowly open the throttle it seems OK, but if I open the throttle fast, it bogs down and dies.  I'm running V&H exhaust, K&N lunchbox, 150 Mains, 40 Pilots, 2 #4 washers on needles, 3 turn on mixture screws.  The floats seem to be to low but I'm not sure how to adjust them properly, the Clymer manual doesn't really help.  Should the metal tang be bent up towards the carb body, or away from the body, while the carbs are still installed.

P.S., I work at Lowes so if anyone needs things like washers or screws, bolts, things like that let me know, my store seems to always have the stuff in stock.

Haynes to the rescue!

See item 7.  The measurement pictured in illustration 9.7 should be 14.6mm +/- 1.0mm.

After you set floats, if still falling on its face when you open throttle quick, but works fine if you open slow ... then slide comming up too fast.
Cool.

I like to sit on my bike while its on its center stand and pretend to ride - way better than actually riding..

Well I tried the nylon screw trick in the slides and now the bike seems to be running the way it's supposed to.  I'll go for a little longer ride tonight after it starts to cool down outside.

Still bogs a little when throttle is opened quickly, but it doesn't die like before.  I'm going to try adjusting the mix screws to see if I can balance it out a bit more.
