Painting an exhaust

Just got a 1997 GS 500 e with some exterior rust on the exhaust.  I would like to paint it.  Does anyone have any experience with this? How to treat the rust and what heat resistant paint works best?

I'm interested in doing mine as well and theres a little article on painting your exhaust on the Mofications page. There isn't a ton of rust on mine but what is there I'm going to scrap off with some steel wool then I'm going to coat the whole thing with some bbq paint which I heard works just as well as paint made specifically for painting exhaust systems, but its definately cheaper.

if its on the actual can I dont know what to do but if its on the header pipe rust oleum high heat bbq paint.

I painted mine with a flat black high temp paint from the auto parts store.
I basically just took off the entire system and sanded all the rust off and put plenty of coats of paint on. The key after you have it all painted and nice looking is prevention, keep her dry.

If I keep my bike I am thinking of having mine ceramic/powder coated silver.

your best bet is to have the exhaust media blasted and then jet-hot coated.  or a more economical solution, wire brush, sand paper, rust remover (naval jelly) , bbq high-temp paint, and lots of elbow grease.

I sanded, and sprayed with high temp paint, but this winter will be powder coating. I don't want to have to do it every year anymore.

i repainted mine this past winter and the rust has re-appeared :guns:   i think i'll take jiggersplat's suggestion and use naval jelly next time.

You have to get rid of the rust entirely.  Take the can off.  Work it with a scouring pad, hard, all over, rinsing frequently.  When you think the rust is all gone, scour again about the same amount of time that you did already.  Go down to 400 grit and smooth it out.  Then paint with high-temp BBQ paint.

I don't remember what my '00 can was like, but my '04 had a metal plate bolted to the exhaust for prettiness.  Take that off first, if you have it.

Did mine, exhaust and silencer. on my 89 model  Wet and dried the chrome to give a key. used a high temperature spray paint especially for engines etc. Satin finish black. Several light coats and it looks a million dollars. well nearly Took me a couple of hours. Did the exhaust system as well in the same way. It looks the biz and has stayed.
