Newbie question about when and where to do re-carb and rejet

Hi all,

I got a used GS500 for a couple of months and I love it a lot. Reading the posts in this forum helps me understand more about the bike, as many fellow bikers also have the same questions that I want to ask. But there is something that I don't understand about carburators and want to ask.

1) I always saw posts about re-carb and rejet. So when should I do a re-carb and/or rejet for the GS? Are there any symptoms that will tell me it's time for a re-carb or rejet?

2) Recently, I found out that I need to keep the choke on much longer before the bike completely warms up. I don't think the temperature has changed that much, will it be an issue related to the carburator?

3) Where should I take the bike to do a re-carb or rejet if I don't want to do it myself? Should I take it to a Suzuki dealer?

seeing as your in the la area, I'd reccomend sendig the carbs to Srinath before taking the bike to a dealer, then as a last resort take the bike to a triumph dealer, as the british shops service departments are worlds of difference from Japanese ones.  then if you just don't care about wasting time and money take it to your local suzi stealer.

1) The only time you should have to re-jet your carb is if you are having carburetion problems. When carburetors (carbs) don't do their job right (carburetion - the mixture of air and fuel), such as allow too much air into the combustion chamber, the engine runs poorly.
Re-carb is a new term I've never heard of, but it seems to point to the act of sending your carbs to Srinath.

Where - The carbs of course  :lol:  ... that where the rejet will help most ... Let's say you rejetted the ... headlight ... may not make much of a diff ...  :lol:  :lol:  :lol:
Well get davipu over there with a keg of beer and some sambiches ... and your problems might go away ... or be much much worse ... you'll not worry about rejetting ...  :lol:
Yea you can send it to me ... Get davipu to take it off if you cant ... prolly cheaper than paying a shop by far ... OK he may be too far away ... but I guess 2 kegs oughta do it then :lol:

Thanks for all the input. Today, I just found there is a small local bike shop near where I live. It's not a dealer, but it's a shop that sells bike parts but also work on motorcycle repairs. I guess I will take the bike there and let them have a checkup and see if it is a carb problem. If it is, I will figure out how to take it apart and send it to Srinath.
