So, I went to the shop today, and asked them to price me for a few parts. The first thing I wanted to know the cost of was the headlight for an '02 model (and all applicable mounting hardware), which came out to $360ish. Seriously. The reflective bit alone was $120, and the metal housing it goes into was $95. There was a bolt on there, ONE BOLT, that cost $1.77. A BUCK SEVENTY SEVEN FOR A SINGLE BOLT?! WTF?! It wasn't even a super complex bolt or anything.

Next thing I had them price for me was a set of clip-ons and a top plate for an '89 GS (Which I'm still looking to buy, people! :poke:) The bars alone cost $40, and the top plate cost about $320. $360 for a set of OEM clip ons? That is freakin' insane.

A Suzuki stealership told me it would cost $46 for a set of fork seals and dust covers  :o
I bought fork seals off eBay for $11 and I will just reuse the dust covers

One OEM bar-end costs $24.

Don't buy bolts from Suzuki.  They'll have to order it first of all, and you can usually get 2 bolts for a quarter at Home Depot or Lowes.  Check ebay for the rest.

Yeah, I know about the bar-end pricing. I'm having to pay that much for one right now, actually. And $54 for a stock handlebar. Thank goodness the $1700 insurance check is covering that, plus money in my pocket for mods! :D :)

Yeah I've had a recent experience with that too.  The clutch lever I replaced would have cost $76 if bought from the dealership.  Needless to say I bought aftermarket and it was about $8.

Dealers make the bulk of their profits off servicing and spare parts, hence the $$$

I will sell you the top plate and clip ons for $100 including shipping.  You will want to bead blast them and paint them as the previous owner painted them purple.

My local suzuki stealership is pretty smal, maybe 15-20 new bikes in the showroom. The owners SON drives an rt-10 viper.

If you really want expensive, I needed to buy a factory BOSE system bolt for a work project, $5 each. Bought a replacement at fastenal for $.33!

TheGoodGuy

well i buy a few things from the dealer, but they arent that expensive. I bought fork seals (OEM seals since i really didnt trust the After market ones) and then I bought the Suzuki Shims...

some dealers really jack up prices others are moderate with parts prices.

I think the price hikes also have to do with what is being ordered. Some parts can be cheap, some can be hideously expensive.
