So I was trying to swap in progressive springs this morning, the 'lazy way', using pantablo's tripod site, and i think i cross threaded the fork main cap.  I can't get the cap back on even with thesprings out and found metal shavings.  So am I screwed or what?  I have a feeling I'm screwed.  What are my options?  Thanks to all who have some insight!

The cap is aluminium and the tube is steel - any thread damage is probably to the cap - look at the threads on the cp and you should be able to see any damage.  If the number of damaged threads is small enough, you may be able to clean it up and till use it.  If not, you will need a new cap.

Inspect the tube as well - although the steel is stronger than the aluminium, the threads may be either damaged or clogged with the stripped off threads from the cap.  If the threads are damaged then you are going to have to replace the tube.

Even if everything looks good, you definately will need to remove the forks and disassemble them to make sure that there are no metal filings inside the forks.

its easier to put back the forkcaps without the preload put on. I could not put on my fork caps with teh preload.. its way too hard. So i took out the preload and installed it. It still works because the progressives ride up to the bottom of the threads and i put a washer (thick ones) and so its slightly preloaded) but easy enough for me to screw it in.

Thanks for the help!  Would you guys happen to know what kind of job taking the tubes out is?  I worried about doing it myself.  If you knew of references with instructions to do that it would be great.
