Well I have not had a chance to get on here in about a week.  I work at a small fiberglass plant, and in the past 2 months there has been talk of cut backs in the salary employees.  I was hired in November of 1997 as a Quality tech.  Since then I have been trained and done several different jobs.( Furnace tech, Binder/resin Tech(mix person, Supervisor in 2 different depts, and some R&D work.)  The plant has moved some stuff around and I had been moved back to QC from supervisor when they layed off and when production was cut back.

Last Monday they set a meeting for Tuesday morning with some of the Salary employees .    When I was not envited I thought I was getting canned, reason for this was 4 of them had 25+ years in at the plant.  Well I got off work Tuesday at 8 AM and went home and to bed.  My Dad also works there and stopped by the house on his lunch break and woke me up.  He said they let 10 of the Salary people go and I just got moved up to full time Supervisor and replaced a guy that had been there for 25 years.  

I went and asked why they kept me.... They said " You asked to be trained in several different jobs, No problems in past and a good work record, you came in and helped when we had emergencies(flooding and fires), positive attitude, and you know your job and this place well."

Almost all of the people that got fired were my main friends....  I seen a couple and they wouldn't even wave at me.  I feel good that I finally get the job that i deserve but I did not want to get it this way, by losing some of my close friends.

Should I try and talk to them?

maybe they just didn't see you when you waved or wern't paying attention. I'd take that outgoing additude that you showed at work and see if you can find them a new carreer opputunity. for them it's important to see this as a carreer change and it is up to them to make it a positive one.  if they can't see what happened from the company's POV then they need to take another look. it's all about money, for the company to retain a employe with less than 50% of his carreer life left over one with 75% whould just be stupid management, let alone the employe with the longer carreer life has already expressed his value to the company by adapting to changing situations.  as being thier friend it is up to you to help them remarket thier skills as to provide another company with a valuable asset.  

btw if you have any cloth scraps laying around i need about 3 square yards of 180 weave.  small pieces are cool.

Wow!! davipu said a mouthful! And it wasn't bad advice! If he's not careful, he's going to have to change his signature.

Congrats on adapting and keeping your job. Even though it's not your fault, your friends will likely feel resentful. Whatever you can do to help them transition will probably help to smooth their ruffled feathers, but they've got to be willing to help themselves, too. Perhaps you might offer to give them references? Or help with their resumes?

You sound as though you're a very good friend, but don't let YOUR good work ethic and the fact that you kept your job by being proactive make you feel guilty about THEM not keeping theirs.

Hopefully they'll land at another job soon and learn from this experience....

Your former co-workers are in shock, that sucks, and their pissed... but it wasn't your fault and after they cool off they'll realize that.  (surely)

Yeah, talk to them, this is a bad time for them and some will be bitter, some will get over it. When you took on other jobs and helped out in emergencies I don't suppose for one moment your motive was to shaft your mates was it? True freinds will come to understand that.

Your motives and intent were OK, you have no need to feel reproach or remorse.
