VHS to DVD

I have tons of VHS tapes.  And I have a superdrive dvd burner on my computer.  

Whats the easiest way to convert my VHS tapes to DVDs using my superdrive?

we use a "dazzle" usb video input on the pc.  hook the dazzle to the pc, the vcr to the dazzle then hit play.  dazzle comes with video capture and editing software.  there maybe better ways but the dazzle is pretty cheap

If you want/need higher resolution transfer you can use a product that uses a Firewire(IEEE1394) connection. They cost a little more though.


Etiher way you will use up a lot of hard drive space in the process.

Oh ... wait a sec then ... we just bought some crappy video and dvd player/recorder ... so it will record DVD's that look like sheite ... same quality as the VHS source ... worse than VHS ...

Ummm.... how's Firewire going to produce a higher resolution transfer?  I thought the key difference between firewire and USB was the rate of transfer - not the quality.  That, and isn't Firewire Hardware driven, vs USB being software driven  - ie, less resources being used for FW?

Yep.  

I haven't researched the VHS/DVD conversion, though - and I need to.  I have a lotta tapes that I need to transfer before they're lost.

Well it is not really an issue if you are using standard VHS.

But there is higher end gear for use with higher resolution formats like SVHS that uses Firewire b/c of the higher bandwidth available. So FW doesn't result in higher resolution BUT it can maintain higher resolution if it is there.

Some of the really cheap USB stuff produces poor dupes in my experience.
