just wanted to introduce myself, im a 21 year old college student and i wanted to start motorcycle riding, and while i have minimal riding experience (dirt bikes when i was 13) i was looking for a first bike.  I know my limits and know not to start off with anything that has too much power and was wondering some pros and cons of the GS500 casue from what ive been reading it seems perfect, also any other tips anyone wants to add im very eager to learn.  thanks in advance!

I might as well say it before someone else does: take the MSF course.  It's a lot of fun, and a great way to learn how to ride.  Plus, depending on your state, that may be all you need to get a motorcycle license.

Oh thank jebus I got to you before Roadstergal did. He's gonna say you should just use the search function and blah blah blah, but I say ignore that whole mumbo jumbo crap and just ask away.

Welcome to the forum. The people here are going to be very helpful for ya. :thumb:

GS is the BEST starter bike still being made.  At least in my opinion. :thumb:   It is big enough that you can ride it long distances, or on the highway, but it is very forgiving, and the naked one's are cheap to fix when you drop them  .  I'm 24 and in college, and I've been riding my GS for a little over 4 years, I still love it.  If I have my way I'll have my (or at least a) GS for the rest of my life.  So, welcome    and get a GS.

Thank you. I thought someone might hate that guy as much as me. The search engine here likes to return 8,423,534 results for every search no matter how specific anyway.

About the question, the GS500E is indeed a great beginner bike. In my opinion, it is the best looking of its main competitors, the Ninja 250/500 and Kawa EX500. The full fairing looks just as good as most 600-1200RR bikes out there, but its got the right amount of power to have fun, but not get you into too much trouble. I've only been riding my GS500E for a little over a week, but I haven't opened the throttle all the way yet, nor have I put it into 6th more than twice. Its a great bike and maintains its value so should you decide to upgrade you will be able to easily sell it/trade it in.

Welcome to the forum; the search engine works just fine for those who truly know how to use it, and practice makes perfect...

rtcpenguin:

Others may be willing to overlook (or make light of) your obnoxious remark about Roadstergal; I'm not one of them...

As has already been said, RoadsterGAL is NOT a guy, and what's with all this HATE bullshit? Is it because Roadstergal uses a photo of John Lennon as HER avatar, or because SHE actually gives helpful advice to people in order to educate them? Roguegeek might be a little confused on the details of Roadstergal's identity (which is his problem), but he didn't mention HATING anyone, much less that he hates Roadstergal.

You've been riding for less time than it will take me to type this; pull your head out of your ass, before someone else does it for you. There are plenty of other HATERS who post here; you're obviously too young to hate ANYONE for ANY reason, regardless of what you might think at your age now. Though many members of this forum are new to motorcycling, I've got leathers older than you; hell, I'll bet my first full-face helmet is older than you. It is sitting on a shelf in my den, along with other mementos of nearly thirty years on two wheels; in all that time, I've never hated anyone, because of a lesson I learned back in 1974, watching a twisted old man self-destruct on national television. He was one of the great haters of all time; on his last day in office, he told us, "Always remember, others may hate you -- but those who hate you don't win unless you hate them, and then you destroy yourself." In all of recorded history, that hater had to learn the hard way the price of hate; his psychotic hatred of others cost him the presidency of the United States.

Lastly, if you NEED to hate someone, take a number, get in line, and start with ME. Roadstergal actually HELPS people who post here looking for advice, and I doubt she has much experience with haters. If you really think hating is so important, bring it on... if not, you should apologize to Roadstergal and consider this a good life-lesson while you're still young enough to learn from your mistakes.

Roadstergal:

You're truly an asset to this forum, and the non-haters here already know that... give rtcpenguin some time; I think he'll smarten up sooner rather than later. Here's hoping he PMs you soon to make amends, though I actually hope he'll do it publicly, because I think it will save him a lot of grief in the long run...

Wow. This thread got some nasty vibe real quick. It's like when you were a kid, out with your family at diner, and dad hits mom right in front of everyone.
"Mommy's alright. Just keep eating. Keep eating."
"But I don't want to eat mommy."
"No. It's alright. Daddy just got a little upset at mommy. Keep eating."
"Ok mommy."

I don't hate anyone. Suppose to be a joke and I'm pretty sure most people (except for rtcpenguin) took it that way. She's always been super helpful and fun with the boards. Now what I am at fault for is not knowing she's a she. And knowing is half the battle. :thumb:

I also didn't realise RoadsterGal was a RoadsterGal until I finally read her name.  I think a lot of people recognize forum members more by their avatar than their name. :)
