Final Jetting Question for Me!

I'm re-jetting my carbs on my 2001 GS500 tommorrow and I have a final few questions (already searched and didn't find anything that would make this more simple):

1) How many screws out on the air mixture screw?

2) Where is and how do I get to the air mixture screw?

3) When screwing the air mixture screw out do I start where the stock setting is and do a certain amount of turns out, or do I screw it in all the way and do the certain amount of turns from there?

4) Where the heck do those #4 washers go? And how many go in?

5) How do I get the jets out, are they all screw in/out, or is there more to it? I looked at my manual and I know it is only for the 89-00 carbs so it's not helping too much.

6) Any other advice/tips that would aid in the process of me re-jetting?

As for mods: V&H SS Exhaust, K&N Lunchbox Filter, Bob B Advancer, and 147.5/67.5/20 Jets.

THANKS TO ALL WHO REPLY, YOU ALL DON'T KNOW HOW BIG OF A HELP YOU HAVE ALL BEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did see that, the only problems are I'm an IDIOT and this is the first carbs I have ever even touched or even seen.

My main questions are in the picture in the link you gave me what are the two things on the outside of the float cover? The round cover in front of a recessed screw (is that the air mixture cover?) and the slotted/recessed screw (I unscrewed it and it wasn't all the way screwed down, it was 3 turns out, is that normal?. What exactly is this screw, and do I have to mess with it, and why is it not screwed down all the way. I want to do this all right the first time so I'm not completely confused, and have to try again.

And where the hell do these little washers go? Inside the black covers on top of the carbs? And if so how many do I put in, and do I just put it in along with the stock spacer or do I take it out?

The main thing I REALLY want to do is find the air mixture screw and adjust it. Do I count outwards from where it's set now or fully screw it in and count from there? Also how many screws is good with my mod setup, and what does the mixture screw effect, idle or on throttle or what?

If somebody can answer all these idiotic/newbie questions I would consider you my HERO.

THANKS for the link Roadstergal and to all who reply, Kyle -BigTwin-

The recessed screw on the far right of that picture is the air mix screw.  If your carbs are as new from the factory and have never been messed with, there will be a brass plug over that screw that you will have to drill into to tap and then pull out.  Use a drill bit a little smaller than the plug, go slowly so you don't drill into the screw underneath, and drill a hole into the plug.  Pop it out with a screwdriver or whatever else you have handy that will do the job.

The washers go under the e-clip on the top of the needle that is down in the middle of the slide.  When you pull the black covers off, you'll see the slides going down into the carbs, surrounded at the top by black rubber diaphragms.  Pull the slides out carefully so you don't tear the diaphragms, and turn them upside down in your hand to get the needles and spacer out.   Put the washers on the needle (the number you need will depend on how your bike runs, use the suggestions in the FAQ post that Roadstergal linked) and then put the spacer back on the needle.  Then drop everything back into the slide and put the slides back in the carbs.  You can also use a magnet to pull the needles out of the slides w/o removing the slides from the carbs, but it can be a Buddha Loves You to get the plastic spacers to hold still when you put the needles back in.

Fully screw it in and then count out from there.  3-3.5 turns out seems to be the suggested number -- once again, it's something you'll have to play with to get it set right.  A turn is one full 360-degree rotation of the screw.

it's actually a 3mm washer not #4 washer

just unscrew them using a flat head screwdriver

Well, weird thing is my air mixture screw cap is gone. I guess when I took it to the dealership to get carb work done they must have taken it out. And what is the most commonly used # of washers to use under the black cap?

THANKS for all the help, BigTwin

I had no cap over the air mixture screw on my '04, and I bought it new.

THANKS Roadstergal, did you put washers in your carbs? If so, how many?

How will I know if I put in to many or not enough washers? And I need #3 washers and not the #4 washers? Should I get the nylon ones or the metal ones, and in what thickness?

THANKS AGAIN, Kyle -BigTwin-
