I think people didn't leave for a few reasons:

1.  They couldn't think of a way to get out for whatever reason...  Car mentality...  No Car == Trapped.
2.  They weren't mobile enough due to health.
3.  They didn't believe that it was going to be as bad as it was.
4.  They didn't know they had to leave until it was too late.

I tend to believe you here. Sitting around and saying, "they're stupid for not leaving" is the most ignorant shaZam! I've ever heard.

i also wonder if some of the people sitting around after the flood apparently not doing much to help themselves were suffering from shell shock.  sounds like people have seen some pretty horrible things.

Things I have learned from watching the news about Hurricane Katrina on TV

1.      The hurricane only hit black family's property.

2.       New  Orleans was devastated and no other city was affected by the hurricane.

3.     Mssissippi is reported to have a tree blown down.

4.     New Orleans has no white people.

5.   The hurricane blew a limb off a tree in the yard of an Alabama bresident.

6.      When you are hungry after a hurricane steal a big screen TV.

7.      The hurricane did 23 billion dollars in improvements to New Orleans: now the city is welfare, looter and gang free and they are
in your city.

8.      White folks don't make good news stories.

9.      Don't give thanks to the thousands that came to help rescue you,
instead Buddha Loves You because the government hasn't given you a debit card yet.

10.     Only black family members got separated in the hurricane rescue efforts.

11.     Ignore warnings to evacuate and the white folks will come get you
and give you money for being  stupid.

12.     Oh, and it is all George Bush's fault.

Fantastically done, and I agree with EVERY ONE.
All they show are the whiners, and 95% of the time they're black.
