Hello everyone.  I'm J from San Antonio.  I've been a member for a couple months and thanks to you all here I bought an '05 GS500F (Thank You).  Everyone provides so much info, and I really appreciate it.
I know I'm well overdue for an 'official' post, but everytime I had a question, I used the SEARCH function, and eventually, I found the answer to my problem.
Well today, I kinda have a stumper.  Well it is/was to me.  Okay, here's the situation.  After buying the GS, I read the site and decided to do the oil change myself.  I used bought an OEM Oil Filter and Amsoil oil (let's just say I hadn't thoroghly read through the site at that time).  Well due to money constraints, I've been late on my next oil change.  I plan to do it this weekend.  However, I did continue to top off my bike with Amsoil, but I think I overfilled it this past weekend.  I've been leaking oil ever since. But, from the posts, I think it's merely run-off.  (As you can see I'm long-winded)
Anyway, I know that an oil change is definitely overdue.  But, this morning b4 work, I started my bike (w/ choke) and the rpms jumped to 3000, stayed there a couple seconds then died.  After that, she wouldn't start.  I called into work (my GS is my only mode of transpo now  :)  ) and after reading the forum alittle more, realized it might be a low fuel prob.  Well, gott'er started and cleared up that prob, but now smellin' gas and oil everytime I stop.  And, I'm still leaking oil!  Can anyone please help.
 Thanx in advance!
J

Check the oil level - is it still high?  If so, use a turkey baster or something and suck the extra out.  Oil too high can result in oil blown into the airbox through the vent - so oil may continue to leak out of the airbox drin for a long time.  Did you park the bike with the petcock in prime?  If so, you could have a stuck float which would leak gas and flood the airbox and, once again give you a gas oil smell for a long time.  You could also end up with gas in the oil - you should be able to tell just by sniffing the dipstick - if so, do not run the bike AT ALL until you chainge the oil and filter - no point in using that expensive amzoil and then ruining you engine by running it diluted with gas - any cheap oil is better tan that mix.

Greetings and belated welcome!

Where are you leaking said oil? From the filter cover? If so you may have installed the o-ring improperly.

Too much oil? Make sure the bike is on (as much as possible) level surface on the center stand and use the dip stick. Make sure you wait for a few minutes after running the engine to allow distributed oil to return to the crank case.

Too much oil for sure? Pull the drain plug enough to drain some out. You will need to deal with those nice covers to get to it. :) You will get messy hands. That's just part of wrenching our beloved GS.

Thanx for the quick reply, first off.  Well, no I didn't do the above.  But, I know I was getting close to hitting the reserve.  That's one of the reasons why I THINK I had the prob this morning starting it.  But, after reading some threads, I put 'er in prime, then switched 'er to RES and she started up.  However, as you said I was overfilled, so I took your advise and removed it.  Took a couple rides, and checked again, and all looks good as far as the oil level now.  Thanx so much!

Oh, and I learned my lesson about that expensive oil after reading this forum more.  I will stick to the "cheaper" brands.  You know how it is, newb, first bike, gullable as hell  :P

And to you, thanx for the quick response  :)  !!
I haven't had the leakage problem until recently.  I was at a gas station and felt lots of heat.  Thought it was the engine, so I reached into the bag, and thought I was topping off. (Off subj., but my Dad rides a Suzuki Burgman 650 and Moms drives a Yammie Majesty 400, and they believe in taking vehicles to stealerships, so when I said I was doing my own oil change, they researched and found that GS's burn oil fast.  That's why I carry oil  :dunno:  )   Well, I wasn't flat, and alittle too paranoid (thanx folx), I guess    !

Ha, good to see someone else from SA here.  I thought I was the only one there for a second. I mostly travel on the northwest side of town. I have only seen one other F like ours and he goes to SAC, as do I. Ill be looking out for you, Ride safe in this HEAT!

FYI

I tried MANY different types of oil in my gs.  Everything from the .79 walmart stuff to full syn motul.

rotella-t = crap.  Shifted horribly and made the motor noisy.
castrol gtx = not too bad.  shifted so-so. motor was sorta noisy.
mobil 1 MX4 motocycle syn = shifted awesome. noisy motor. made the clutch slip. (replaced it)

motul 3000 = really good. shifted so-so.. motor was quiet.
motul 400 or whatever full syn = shifted AWESOME. motor was noisy. worried about clutch slippage (even though it didn't happen in the ~200 miles.

motul 5150 (5100) semi-syn.  PERFECT. engine is super quiet.  shifts are butter-smooth with NO mis shifts.  I 100% recommend it.  at $4 it's a little pricey, but what... $16 in oil isn't worth it every ~3k miles? (even though im a freak that changes oil like 1000-1500 miles AT MOST)

TarzanBoy

1000-1500 miles?  Holy crap!  Looks like i'm about due for an oil change then, seeing as how I have your old bike! :-)

She has about 1000 more miles than when I got her.  I washed and waxed her over the weekend... but then it freakin RAINED the very next day.  I also lubed up the chain (which was probably 400 miles overdue since you're supposed to do it every 600 miles... i wont' be overdue again)

Should I go ahead and pop a new air filter in as well while she's up on the center stand?

Hey Budrick320  I live on the NE side, but work on the SW side. Commute about 75mi. [roundtrip] daily, usually 410W or 410S depending on traffic. I'm at Palo Alto/A&M, but I was at SAC this summer. I've seen a blue 04 F on this side as well as about 4-5 E models. I also have seen a blue 05 F on the NW side quite often. Still haven't seen any of those elusive black 05 Fs. So, I'll be lookin' out for you. Ryd Safe...

Quoterotella-t = crap. Shifted horribly and made the motor noisy.
:o
Cheesy, I've read on many oil related threads that Rotella works just fine. I was planning on using it for this weekends oil change. But, I think I'll go ahead and give the Motul 5150 a shot since it comes highly recommended. $4 a pop is still a whole lot cheaper than what I was paying for Amsoil. I must say though, that Amsoil did have my bike running pretty smoothly [until I overfilled]. Thanx again.

rotella was not okay w/ MY bike.  it had ~13k miles on it at the time...

motul 5100> all.  (for me)

I thought Rotella was for big diesel motors. It has a lot of cleaners in it.
