She tricked me

About 10 minutes ago I was at an intersection in 1st gear, so when my turn comes, I start to pull away and the shift into 2nd gear, then as Im starting to accelerate I suddendly feel that Im not pulling away anymore, and the revs go at 8000 for a second there...

im like WTF is going on! and within half a second I realize im in neutral, so somehow the gear was 'lost' or something.
Is not like a did nothing special.

The gs is a bag of tricks alright.

[edit] I read my own post, and it's a bit confusing  :P

I was already in second gear pulling away for a few seconds, when the gear suddendly disengaged by itself or something.

That'll happen.  Just shift with more force, that does it for me, anyway.

thats what we call LLT syndrome. its known by other names and All bikes can suffer from it.

false neutral. I also sometimes get that between 2nd and third, but it hasn't happened since I've past the 1000 mile mark. I think your feet find a pattern and then you keep it from happening.

I suffer a pretty severe case of LLT.... I've gotten pretty good at QUICKLY trying again and getting that puppy into second gear!!  :?

yes, I know about the false neutral, as I have experienced it too, but this one was different, since the gear was already engaged and I was already rolling and speeding up, when suddendly it was as if I had pressed the clutch and gone to neutral.

oh well. gotta get used to a few quirks every once in a while.

here is something that might help, pull the shifterlever and adjust it down acouple of splines, do this to all my bikes so its less likly to catch a case of the LLT

Not really a "false neutral" as you actually did find neutral instead of going all the way to 2nd.  There is a star shaped cam on the end of the shift drum with little notches in it. There is a relatively small notch for neutral between 1st and 2nd. If you don't actuate the shifter mech. enough (LLT) it tends to rotate back and settle in the neutral position.

Problem is that this tends to misalign the shift dogs which can lead to that nasty grating grinding sound if you try to kick it straight up into 2nd.  Best bet is to go back down to 1st with the clutch in, and then reattempt to shift back up to 2nd.

Question:  On the GS, I find it much easier to find neutral from 1st.  In my very limited experience with other motorcycles, I've found it easier to go down from 2nd.  Is this other people's experience, or am I just lacking "the touch"?

I've found it easier to shift into neutral from first as well, and slightly difficult to get into it from 2nd.

That actually happened to me for the first time yesterday, I was in 1st leaving my grandparents driveway, get onto the street and I'm all of the sudden in neutral, I guess it wasn't all the way in gear...

I believe this happened to me during the MSF eval on one of the nighthawk 250's.  I had been having trouble occasionally throughout the class with the bike going into neutral, but I figured it was just my fault (lazy shift).  During the eval, on the corner test I bumped it up but got neutral.  Then I bumped it up with some oomph and it felt like it dropped out again when I rolled on the throttle...definitely in neutral.  It was either something I did wrong, or it was slipping out of gear.  I ended up blowing the corner big time (too slow, then turned too quick and cut the inside of the corner), but did well enough on the other sections to make it irrelevant.
