Is this supposed to just fall off?

So I took off my rear wheel today to do a brake job, and when I started to try to loosen the bolts holding the disc on, I heard a clunk, and the cush drive plate fell off, sprocket and all.  There doesn't seem to be any actual connection to the wheel itself.  Is that right?



Also, these five black rubber vibration dampeners.  How hard are they really supposed to be?  Mine are very hard, but not quite to the point of brittle.



They're $5.10 each at bikebandit.com....should I replace them?

Any thoughts?

yep that's normal.  as  long as you can't move the sprocket around when it's in the wheel then the rubber pieces are still good.

ok, I think this might be a good place to ask.

WTF? What the heck?! Why? ...

Why isn't it bolted to the wheel? What is the point? Are all bikes like that?

Feel free to yell at me if you think this would turn up in a search, but I can't see that. Plus, other people might come here and wonder too. (or I could be the only person that doesn't know...)

when you bolt it to the wheel then you will be replacing wheels as fast as tires.  by providing a rubber dampner in there you remove the impact forces from the motor to the rear wheel or from the  wheel to the motor.  it's a really common design. it can't fall off untill you remove the rear axle so it's really secure.

Okay, that's cool.  It's just that when I moved the wheel and it fell off I said "Oh crap, what'd I break now?"

I thought the same thing when I took my back wheel off to get the new tire mounted.  All my experience with motorcycles has been dirt bikes and they don't have anything like that on the rear wheel.  I'm sure it's because on a dirt bike the shock is taken up by the less traction that dirt has to offer, the tire just spins a bit when you shift.

Ah, that explains why when I rode one for my BRC, It seemed like it was freaking hard to shift smooth, while noone else had the problem to the extreme like me. (but i got it figured out, more clutch longer) Sweet, so my bike won't be like that? nice.
