So I can't find the post we had where we were talking about the Ninja 650, so I'll start a new one.

This lady at my work has a Ninja 250. She's had it since March or so and has about 500 miles on it (yeah, not too much of a rider there now, are we?). She  has no skills in terms of working on it and even paid the shop to install her "cool" new green grips (trust me, I tried to tell her it's a simple job you can do at home). So she's not big into bikes like I am.

She comes up into my office today and shows me the new catalog for Kawis. I tell her I've seen them already and like them (but they're not out, she argued, so I couldn't have seen them   ). She then tells me that the stealership really wants to buy her 250 back for the exact amount she bought it for (right...) and that she wants the 650  :o  :o  :o

Are you serious? So I'm stunned. I tell her that I wouldn't even touch that thing, and I'm about to hit 2500 on the GS. I say that I am hoping to at least double my mileage on my bike before I even THINK about another bike, and it will be a used SV or TL most likely. No way in hell would I buy a brand-new Ninja 650.

So she starts saying "well if you wouldn't..." and whatnot. Yeah, sweetie, 500 miles on a little 250 isn't nearly the amount of seat time you need before you are a good rider.

I couldn't believe she was saying that.  :?

I'm not hating on the bike or anything (I actually like the new Ninja a lot), it's just the shaZam! that runs through the heads  of some people...

Dave

That is all.

I won't be upgrading for a looooong time -- every time I think I'm getting to be a better rider, all I have to do is look at my chicken strips.  I don't get out and ride enough, and 90% of my riding is on the highway or in town, so improvement comes slow.

Totally cures me too...

I'm still working on not counter leaning in corners and fighting the urge to wheelie.

is she so bad that she'll look better after she crashes?

Again, in order:

If she was hot, we wouldn't be having this convo. Hot girls can get away with a lot more stupidity; you expect the others to have brains. Wink  ;)

And that is not going to be answered. She is 45 with children and grandchildren, so the idea of a crash bothers me. I won't be that morbid.

Dear ladies of GSTwin,

Please note that my prior post was a joke and nothing more. You are all hot in my eyes. And in my pants.

Signed,

upgrade to the kawi 650 from a 250? What a tard.. I'm just starting out on the kawi 650, buying one as soon as my local stealership can get me one, dad said he'd put it on his credit card, he's buying my gear, I'm getting a helmet and some cool t-shirts to wear when I ride, maybe some new tennis shoes.. dad said he'd pay for the MSF course, but I told him I don't need it, after all, I've ridden plenty of bicycles, how difficult can a little ninja be?

I'm kidding... the GS will almost definitely be my first bike... drats like that lady make me upset...

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

500 mi? She has not even reached the break in period. The break in is like 1,300 mi. That is only two and 1/2 tanks of gas for christ sake. I do 500mi + weekly on my 250. (Can not go wrong with cheapo transportation..)

Tell her, yea sure.. go ahead and get the 650, just make sure that she has someone already in line to take her job so that it can be business at usual when they are scraping her squid ass off the road.

Its a damn TWIN everyone! lots of people have started out on the Suzuki SV-650. Damn. ITs not like its some 650cc inline 4 with super gnarly speed. Look, its even got the crappy handle bars the GS comes with.

500 miles in 7 months? Wow....ha....seriously wow....................

2005-GS500-PDX your avatar cracks me up everytime I see it.

500rider

I know a girl who at the time was about 24 yrs old that started out on a SV650.  She never had any problems that I heard about and did a fair amount of riding with it.  She sold it after about 2 yrs because she changed jobs and was going to be doing a lot of travelling for work and thought she's never have time to ride it.  She was the athletic type though so I think that had a lot to do with her success.

This lady though may not have the same amount of natural ability.

I have ridden an SV650 (see avitar) and I thought it was quite a handful but it was tuned for the track with Hindle exhaust etc.   It took a few laps to get used to it.  By comparison I have also test ridden a Honda F4i and I thought it was very manageable around town.  A newb might not actually have any problem getting around on it any more than the GS.  The problem comes when you open it up full throttle and you're not prepared for the rush of power.

edit
I have also ridden a 2005 Buell Lightning which I thought was an absolutely ridiculous bike.  I have ridden a variety of bikes and this thing is stupid.  The throttle is basically on/off.  It would be impossible for a newb not to crash.

So I think it depends on the bike and the rider.  The new Kawi 650 may be a kitty cat cat.
