no sir.  i did it all by hand.  used to be poorly sprayed white on factory white.  stripped, sanded, sanded again, and again and again etc.  then steel wool of various grades, and finally a used kitchen scouring pad    oh ya and some brasso. then i taped it off and painted with a semi flat black. no clear.  if i can find someone to mount/balance my tire for less than 25 bucks, u'll see it on the bike fairly soon

:thumb:  SWEET... I am doing mine this winter. Can I tape the aluminum and have the centers powder coated? or will the tape not hold for that?

You did a damn fine job...  You might want to clear coat it to help protect that fine job...

You can wet-sand clear coat to a freaky polish too...

ok now comes the questions...  is there something that i can cover the whole wheel with that wont make the black paint glossy?  its a semi flat and i like the way it looks however it seems too soft. and the bare metal scratches sooo easily.  i want to protect it from rocks etc.  so what should i use?

RVertigo

You can get semi-gloss/matte/flat clear coat.

Just do lots and lots of really thin layers.

weaselnoze

what will that do to the polished part?  any prep for that area?

Prep...  Hmm...

No friggen clue.

I was assuming that the clear coat would stick... But, now I'm not 100%.  If it does stick, you can wet-sand the parts thats supposed to be polished and get it back to a nice shine.

I imagine someone has to have a clear coat that will stick to polished metal without chipping off...

Right?

Sure, someone does. I don't know who.. but car wheels come clear coated alot of the time. All that is under there is clear and metal. So there might be a clear prmer, but I don't think so.

hmm.  i'll find out.  still i wonder how a matte clear would turn out on the polished area...  where are the paint experts?!

RVertigo

You can wet-sand and polish the clear coat.

Anything paint can be sanded and polished.

It might look just fine with the matte over the polished part...  It might look bad and need to be sanded/polished.

I did it (poorly) with my '69 bug.  I had one really nice looking spot on the roof...

weaselnoze

what grit do u think?  1500?
