Help! GS500F (05) Dying out

Hiya,

Last week my bike died out (gas set to reg setting) randomly in 4th gear.  It would begin to sputter, then the engine would die.  The bike would only restart if I let it sit for a few minutes.  Also, yes, I had and have a full tank of gas.

I took it into the shop, and as I was riding it back today, same thing happened!  Arg.  Now, the bike only runs well in the PRI gas setting.  Is it due to it being inactive?  (Been raining over a week, little riding done).  Plus, since I'm in CT, it's quite cold now.

I worry about riding it in PRI constantly, but otherwise it dies out.

My license test is this Wednesday, so no time to get it checked out.

Any advise would be great.  The shop checked the carbs, put new gas in it (incase water had gotten in or bad gas), etc.

I'm a newbie obviously.

Thanks

Hmm, sounds like restricted gas flow in the 'on' and 'res' position.

This could be due to a vacuum leak in the vacuum line that opens the
petcock when the engine is running.
This is the narrow tube leading from the front of the left carb to the back of the petcock.
I'd try replacing that tube 1st.

Another possibility is pressure lock in the tank.
If the breather hole in the filler cap has got filled with crap then as the
tank empties you get low pressure in the tank and the fuel stops flowing.
A few minutes rest allows the tank to equalise pressure and then your fine
for a while. next time your engine dies out try opening the gas cap as
soon after it dies as you safely can. If there is low pressure in your tank
you should hear it as you crack the fuel cap open.
Pressure lock can also be aggrivated/caused by using a tank bag.

You ought to be safe enough running the bike on 'pri' as long as you keep an eye on your fuel level and remember to switch to 'on' whenever you stop riding.

just speculating here, but the first thing I'd check is the petcock under the tank to make sure it is fully open, then the vaccum line.
