How much oil does your GS burn?

My 1996 GS500, with 17k miles, burns about 250ml every 1000 miles.  It used to not burn any oil.  I think this started when I checked my valves a couple 1k miles ago.  I'm not dripping any oil, but I can see that there's a slow leak near the tack cable.  And when I'm riding, I'll smell a quick and sudden dose of burning oil.  I figure this is where the leak gets on my pipes.  When my next valve check is due, I'll clean and replace any gaskets that needs it.

So, how much oil does your GS burn?

If your tach cable leaks, try sealing it with teflon tape.....

As far as how much oil the bike uses, mine uses a quart every two tanks on a daily commute, much less on trips.  This is with a sumwhat unknown history, I do know that the last owner did drag race the biek(low 8s int the eith mile), but when I bought it, the speedometer cable was broken.  Going with what was on the odometer then and what I've added since fixing it and then replacing the gauges, there is now well over 50K on the bike.

I'll be reworking the head this winter, as soon as I find another job and finish fixing my fiancee's car........

Mine doesn't burn oil.  It weeps it in small spots all over my pantleg.  When it starts rattling I add a quart and call it good.

On my 2002 GS i noticed tach cable leaking oil too. But it was just loose. I tightened it with some pliers and now it's fine.

My 05 doesn't burn a drop. After about 1,400 miles, the oil level is still a hair above the full line where I left it. I ride her firmly most of the time. Every now and then when nobody is around and I feel like a mudbass I will wind her up (8-9k rpms.) The manual says I shoulda had a valve adjustment/check done at the 600 mile service but the guys working on the bike said I could probably just wait until my 3-4k mile service to have it done and to just save my cash so I said okay. Although, now approaching 1,500 miles I hear the valves tick randomly at idle. They aren't too loud but are getting more noticeable and I'm considering NOT waiting for 3k and using it as an excuse to buy myself the tools I need and learn how to do it myself.

My '00 uses a liter and a bit every 1,500 miles. (30,000 miles on the clock)
Much less when I'm not hammering on her...which is never.

By comparison, my Dad's '78 CB-750K with 13,000 original miles uses half that much oil in the same amount of time.

OK at 8K my 89 was burning almost nothing ... prolly a 1-2 ounces in a 1000 or so. At 15K it was 1/2 quart between changes (2500-3000) miles. at 25K it was a quart + between 3K changes. I switched to non synthetic at this point too. At 35K it was 2 quarts between changes, 40K was over a quart in 500 miles, at 45-48K it was a quart in 300 miles. In all that time, no plug fopuling, no smoke and no perceivable loss in power or rideability. 48K I sold it ... so no clue after that.
Cool.
