how can i explain to a friend of mine that is hard headed? what i'm trying to explain to him is when going faster then say 35 and you want to turn slightly you push in the direction you want to do. i'm 100% sure that i have this right. i show him a page out of the msf book and he said" this doesn't prove anything". i'm trying to prove it to him without letting him ride my bike. he is not covered on insurance. a bad experience a while back. i also tried the reason why this happen is that it turns the chasis and puts you into the turn. please help, if it wrong and all of you say i'm wrong i'm willing to except it.

keep in mind, I don't actually ride yet... BUT... put him on a bicycle... tell him to go as fast as he can, then make a turn... Don't tell him how to make that turn, just tell him to turn... he WILL push the direction he wants to go... if you have a video camera, even better, then you can show him afterwards... Everyone does it on a bike, it just seems that when you THINK about it, the mind rebels and doesn't want to do it.. however, if you just let them do it themselves, their body subconsciously knows that it's right, and it works...

Hope this helps...

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

You are talking about counter steering

If you are going more than a few mph, it is the only way to turn a motorcycle. So your friend is doing it, wheter he realizes it or not.

I'm not sure what the point is. Why are you trying to get this point across to him? Clearly he doesn't ride, or he'd know that to be true. If it's arguing just for the sake of arguing, tell him he wins and let it go; you clearly know the truth.

Show him Larry's article, and if he still doesn't get it, tell him he is a worthless bag of excrement and beat him without mercy.

yea, do that.... OR...tow him on his bike with yours :D

Then get him to experence countersteering at 60mph!

Have him watch a motocross or supermoto race.  Those guys countersteer like crazy.  If he doesn't see the obvious countersteering (like, 45 degrees) at even moderately low speed, he's blind.

Sounds like you want to teach him how to turn, so that he won't crash on your bike (or something).  I strongly recommend against letting him on your ride.  Statistics seem to show that people who are taught to ride by friends are the most likely to crash: even more likely than people who are self-taught.

Sign him up for MSF, if you want.  Sign both of you up, if you want to give him some company.  People who learn countersteering (and other stuff) through MSF are the least likely to crash.

thanks for all the help. im going to print the article and show it to him. if he does believe in it i give up. the funny thing is that he does ride moto cross and watchs it. i have always thought it was a different riding style then street riding. real never got into it. i'm more into to quads then motorcross.
i don't let any of my buddies ride my bike. i have all ready taken the msf course. we are just argue for the sake of it.

That might backfire.  When I took the MSF we never got fast enough  to countersteer.

Don't bother to get into an argument with the guy - not worth it.

Your point will be proven someday when you are able to make the sharp turn and his bike ends up in trees.

Since I'm hard-headed I can tell you one thing...

He'll never get it...  Unless he wants to.  You already told/showed him evidence to support your point.  What more can you do other than to let him crash your motorcycle when he tries to turn incorrectly going 35 MPH?

Don't do that!!  Say this, "OK... You know what?  Fine!  You'll never understand, so just live in your little world of denial and we'll both move on with our lives."

Then anything he says after that, cut him off with a, "FINE!!!  FINE!!!"   :dunno:   Works with me..  I just get really pissed and leave...

pantablo

try this. have him hold a bicycle wheel in his hands-holding at the axles. spin the wheel fast. have him push forward with his left hand. what will happen is that the wheel will tip towards the left, like its turning. this is the basic concept of countersteering.

Jake D

put him on a rotating stool and do the spinning wheel trick.  Then he may understand why the gyroscopic effect makes a bike lean and thus turn.

Also this video does alot to put the remaining doubt out of somebodies head. Especially when people insist that it's only body lean doing the work.
