I got my new 14t sprocket and chain on today.  I'm having trouble moving the rear wheel back to adjust for slack.  I can't loosen the axle nut, it doesn't want to move  :x   I tried using wd-40 on it but it still doesn't move...

Impact wrench or a loooong breaker bar.

Those things get torqued on pretty well.

JetSwing

use a bigger wrench, like a torque wrench...it'll give you more leverage (torque)!

torque is what is important here...r..i.ght....?  :dunno:

don't use a torque wrench as a breaker bar, ever - the packaging for your wrench should say that in big capital letters, along with "don't drop this" and "don't use this as a hammer"

put your ratchet on the axle nut and slip a length of pipe over it to give you more leverage, and use some PB blaster on there if you have to (WD-40 sucks for everything except dispersing water and cleaning)

BTW...  I meant Breaker Bar == non-ratcheting socket wrench with a long-ass handle.

JetSwing

i've dropped my $100 torque wrench, used it as a breaker bar, and as a hammer.

oh yea, it's got a lifetime warranty from sears  :nana:

yeah.... I went down to the hardware store today and picked up a bigger socket wrench. that did the trick.  I rode for about an hour today, overall the 14t sprocket is pretty sweet.  Much better accelleration from 40-60mph.  It doesn't power wheelie but I can get the wheel up a little easier in 2nd gear by dumping the clutch.  Easy install.

WD-40, breaker bar, which is what I have at my disposal - and the nut will turn, but it takes the bolt/guide with it, and the bolt's "legs" just chew up the swingarm instead of holding the guide in place on the swingarm. Anyone have any nifty ideas (or a pneumatic impact that they want to bring over) - I'm all ears.

Consolidation.  :)

Man, I was wailing on that thing for an hour before I came here to vent.  More WD40, a longer breaker bar, and a bigger FH, and it came loose - but that was bad.  They really torqued the piss out of that bolt.

The rest was straightforward - and it's past my bedtime, so I'll try the bike with the 17 tomorrow.

Yeah, why start a whole new thread for something that has already been discussed in one?  :P

I had a hell of a time getting my axel nut loose too. I ended up getting pipe and slipping it over the handle of the wrench and standing on it, bouncing down on it a little bit. I used my FAT ass for good instead of evil

I've never had problems getting my axle nuts loose. Ever. On either of my GSs. I have a big lug-nut T bar to work with though. Slap a 17 or 19 (I don't remember)  wrench on the other end, hold it in place with your leg, lean over and twist. Easy! Sometimes you don't even need to hold the wrench in place to get it to untorque the nut. I even used a torque wrench to torque it back down to the 70-80Nm reccomended torque setting.

This is the first one I've had issues with - and I could get it to move, but only by putting on the breaker bar and standing on it, and that precluded holding the other side, so it turned the guide and scraped the shaZam! out of my swingarm.  I turned it back and whacked the "legs" back into place, and then used the same BFH to whack the wrench on the axle nut.  That dislodged it enough to hold the bolt on one side and the nut on the other.  But it was a maaaajor pain.
