Insurance quote normal? ('05 GS500F)

I called some peeps to get quotes.  Do you think these rates are normal?  They seem much higher than the rates you guys get.  I understand this is partly because I'm insuring a brand new bike and it's my 1st bike.

I'm a 25-yr old single male (renting apt).  I'm financing a brand new GS500 (first bike) and I have had no accidents or tickets.  I took the MSF course.  For complete coverage, with a $250 deductible..........

GEICO wants $1,291 /year

Progressive wants $1,136/ year

I can't do State Farm b/c I insure my car with another company (USAA).

I am 25, single, did not take the MSF course, $500 deductible, with a 2004 GS500F (brand new when I got it). I pay something like $600 a year this year. Last year it was slightly over $800 for the same coverages, but I was 24.  My insurance is also through Progressive. :dunno:

I think a lot of it depends on how long you have been riding; since you have been riding under a year it will be higher. After you have been riding more than that, I think it will go down some like it did with me. Before the GS, I had a scooter that I rode and had insured so that was als considered riding experience   .

And it also has a lot to do with location.

Yeah, my rates went down  about 10% over the first couple of years before our insurance rates went up here in Ontario.

I'm with State Farm with a $250 comprehensive deductible. Well, $250 everything deductable or whatever. Anyhow, I'm a 22 year old male, nothing on my record within the past 3 years. Anything further back than 3 though and there's a few tickets but thankfully they only look back 3!  :) I pay $58/mo or $696/yr. Not too shabby considering I pay double that for liability only on my camaro and you'd think a bike is more dangerous!

Almost forgot... I haven't taken the MSF course yet. Only because they were booked for the rest of the season and they told me to  :nana: until next season... Soooo, whatever I guess. Aside from the fact, I feel that I have a great grasp on riding thus far and it can only improve in the next 5-6 months until next season but I will still take the MSF course.

Man I ramble... Insurance-wise, State Farm said they don't offer any discounts for riders who have taken the course. Which is stupid because everyone should be encouraged to take it, IMO from what I read/hear about it. But, I'm not complaining too much about the discount, they already give me pretty fair rates. Just for poops and giggles I've gotten quotes from other agencies and they were all outrageous compared to State Farm.

Geez,  I am rather surprised at the wide range of premiums you guys are paying.  I am 34 yr old, no drama on my driving record, and I pay a monthly premium of $28.  Heck, that is $6 less than my monthly premium on my life insurance.

I don't know much about the insurance biz, but I do wonder how much you locations play a part.

Is that full coverage? If so what kinda deductable? Both of those can make your premiums cheap or very expensive.

Joshua...That is full coverage $50,000/$100,000 with a $250 deductible.  BUT...I do have quite a few discounts through State Farm....multi vehicle, accident free, advanced motor vehicle pursuit training(occupational side effect).....every little penny helps.....

I definitely have you all beat. 20 year old, first bike ('05 GS500f), no wrecks or tickets within 3 yrs., but I DID have a DWI back in Sept. of '03. Outcome:... $250 deductible with a total premium of.......... 2,100 per year. 178 a month. It sucks. Hopefully I'll be able get them lowered in in the next 8 or 9 months though.  :(

You'll have to compare with others in your area.  rates can vary anywhere from 200 to 2000 across the country.  just check any of the previous 1000 posts on insurance and you'll see.  seems like state laws can vary.  I see some are only carrying 100 to 200 thou liability.  Here in Ontario Canada we carry liability of ...

1 MILLION dollars!!!!    Moooaahhh ahhh aahh Moooaahhh ahhh aahh!!

... seriously.

Man, fo'get yo' insurance rate.  You're lucky you're not in jail.  If I was the judge, I would have sent you to jail.  :nono: DWI is not cool at all.

It seems that most of you just have liability.  How many of you have full coverage and how much is it?  I'm a new rider on a brand new bike.  I don't plan to ever drop it, but jeeze, it's brand new, and what if I did?  Plus, what if it's vandalized or stolen?  I could see that happening in my town.

I understand the liability only for y'all that ride bikes from the 90's or older.

Geico wanted $5000/yr for my new 04 GS500 full coverage. Progressive was similar.

Try bike-line.com. I got a quote at $1100, and yours will probably be even lower.

Ahh I see. Plus you're significantly older so they assume you aren't wild and dangerous like me!   I do have like 10 cars on my policy though so I wonder if I'm actually getting a multivehicle discount... btw, what's this advanced motor vehicle pursuit? Are you a cop?  :? I've never heard of such a certification but would be interested if it lowered my premiums!  :)

I use www.bike-line.com to insure all 4 of my bikes..
When I added the GS my insurance went up by 12 dollars a month.

I pay for 6 months, then the next 6 are payment free..
I chose to pay through the winter so I have the extra cash during the summer to play.  :thumb:

I have USAA also..and I got my bike last year at 25, clean driving record...why don't you insure it through USAA? they insured mine, and I get a multi vehicle discount.
Is this financed? I insured mine, but it's a '97 paid off, and I didn't get full coverage..even so, my premium for a year went up only about 250...

how many years have you been riding?  USAA has told me on two occasions that they won't insure my bike (even if i have a car with them) until i have three years of riding experience.
