Time For A New Bike....

Well, my bf and I went on a group ride today, and the Baby G was a verrrrrrrry bad boy. I broke down several times, and then when we were almost to the top of a tall mountain (Mt. Hamilton for those of you who are local), my little GS decided he was done for the day. He died on exactly the same kind of righthand hairpin turn that he dumped me off of a few weeks ago. This time, he didn't get rid of me.  :nana: We limped home, but that's getting mighty old.

I've decided it's time to get a new bike. My GS will likely stay in the family (my stepson wants to buy him for his wife, and he's good at working on bikes, so he'll likely be able to get the Baby G in tiptop form).

I'm looking at the SV650, the FZ6, and I'm fantasizing about the Gixxer 600. I'm rather a practical sort, so I'll likely go for the FZ6, unless my boo-tay sticks to the Gixxer 600 and won't let go.

Monday is bike shopping day. I need a reliable commuter for work (and for group rides...and fun rides...and...and...and....).

Any comments/suggestions for my shopping spree welcome! ;)

I like all three.  At this time i would go with the SV650s fully faired over the others.  FZ6s are great as are GSX-Rs but I think the SV is best on gas and more suited for an all around commuter than the other two.  But then again i would go with the one your butt is happiest with.  Happy hunting and let us know.

The GSX-R is a totally impractical street bike on a couple of levels.  I'd go for the SV650.

But - if you're new-bike shopping, really, consider a GS500F.  I like mine so much more than my old E.  And a new one won't be plagued with the issues that old bikes can rack up from lack of good care.

If the GS500F had fuel injection, it'd be at the top of the list...I'm tired of carbs and choke.  :x

I gotcha.

Then I'll toss my rec for SV650 and Breva 750 in.  Be sure to look at insurance as part of your decision - I bet that will toss the I-4s into a different light.  I got much better quotes for the SV than the Breva, but I wouldn't be surprised if that one varies.

yeah twins are way cheaper then i-4s, in general.

Yeah, insurance costs are a big reason I'm thinking of the SV650 and FZ6. The Gixxer would likely be out of this world, so I'll probably go practical this time around, and then follow my heart in a year or two.

I'm also looking at gas mileage!  :thumb:

yeah the GSX-R is like 2k a year for me, while the SV and FZ are cheaper than my GS :o .  Naked makes the difference.

That's the only venue where naked is cheaper.

How about a Kawasaki NINJA 650R?  :thumb:

"The very compact liquid-cooled, DOHC, 8-valve 649cc Parallel Twin with fuel injection delivers a smooth responsiveness that is tuned for rider-friendly power characteristics-especially in the low and medium rpm ranges...."

That gets my vote.

Hmmm......I looked at the Ninja 650R, and I could have sworn it had carbs.....I guess I need to go look again.....  :?

Edit: looked again, and it does seem to have fuel injection.  :thumb:

However....it's UGLY (to me)!

Ugly? What's wrong, is it the wrong color?

I think it is much more pleasing to the eye than an SV650, or even an SV650S but thats just me :)

It's not the colour, per se. :P I don't care for the way they have that not-quite-red colour going through the bike... Who knows, perhaps it's something that grows on you. I didn't care much for the black frame on the '06 FZ6's, but that's kind of grown on me now, too.

However, all that being said, I need a new bike NOW, so I won't likely be waiting for the new '06's to come out.... I'll be looking at what's in stock now.

Just a thought here.Since you are considering a GSXR, you might look into a Triumph Speed Four. These are naked, and have got good writeups from the mc press. It uses the engine from the TT600, but retuned for better mid range-not so peakey. They are soon to be discontinued, and you might find a good buy on one-if you liked it.I think they list for just over $6000.00. Of course, you can't go wrong with an SV650 either.
