The work to the GS is done, got a WRX Can

well i bought the GS for about 500 bucks with it needing a little work but having all the necessary parts. So after a couple of months of fiddling (coating the tank, jetting, adding a WRX can, oil change, re routing fuel lines and adding fuel filter, lunchbox, new chain, 2 new tires, hooking everything up, installing new fork seals, cleaning all old goop off of engine and other parts, painting) its pretty much done. I really like this bike. I bought it as a commuter bike because I don't like leaving my other bikes around( this city is terrible for stolen vehicles). It does this job perfectly.  For those of you that have ever visited Vegas, you will understand that this place is full of some of the worst drivers in the world, and the GS scoots around, in between all the crappy traffic I encounter on the way to school.

My buddy Brion had a GS and turned me on to this site long before I ever thought I would own one myself, though I always liked his. They are so much fun and I think I may track it some.

I think my GS has about everything it needs except one thing. At times it "hangs" above idle, then will finally come down off to idle at 1500 rpm. Also at times while stopped mainly, it will clunk, almost as if I had put it in gear, and run funny until I rev it up, it runs almost like its on one cylinder. Is this the cam chain adjustment everyone talks about? I don't know any history on the bike other than that the carbs been rebuilt. Thats about the only fluke it has. Well its leaking on the left side for some reason too, combination gas and oil. And thats it.

Thanks to all of you for keeping up this forum, and providing me with all the necessary answers I needed. i came to the computer and looked up the project I was about to undertake everytime on this board and had no problems at all.

the hanging at high revs is because it's running lean - did you rejet after you added that lunchbox and exhaust?

haniging on returing to idle could be as simple as having a slightly kinked throttle cable.  Try this. Is it worse to return to idle if you have the bars turned to the right or left? I had this problem after a bar swtich and had to take a little slack out of the throttle cable at the adjusting nut up near the throttle.  With the bars turned to the right it would hang at about 2500 rpms until i straightened the bars back out.  Gave it a little slack and no more probs.

Love the exhaust, i get an odd clunk or "chunk" type noise out of mine at idle, i've been told it's the cam chain, but i have yet to go in depth and check it.

I don't like the look of the WRX can, personally. Looks too fart-car-ish. It looks too rounded, and the differing cylinder sizes only make it more awkward, IMO. It looks really short, too, in comparison with motorcycle exhausts. Looks like a coffee can was stuck on the end.

Just my opinion.

Criticism is the highest form of flattery, thank you alpha.
I really like the exhaust, faxxy was right and it is really deep. It does a great job of setting off the annoying car alarms in my apartment complex. When my girlfriend and I rode across town, the first thing she said when she took her helmet off was, "that sounds really good," I asked how? "It sounds really deep." And this is coming from someone who has up until now, been on the back of the ducs listening to their beautiful growls. I'd say thats a great sounding pipe.

So if you are hearing this kind of clunk, I'm guessing the cam chain needs adjustment? I guess I should start searching.

By the way I have Avon Azaro front 110/80/17 and a michelin pilot activ 130/70/17 on the rear, for any of you that are looking for tires. They do fine for me, I haven't pushed them yet, and are much better than the flat spotted tires I used to have.

Actually I never re installed the airbox (bike was apart when I bought it) installed the can, rode it around for awhile with it running like s**t, while I was waiting on the jets to arrive through the mail. Its running fine now.

Dayum! You cleaned that sucker up REALLY nice! That looks nice, lump. How's she sound? A lot better, I hope. I'm thinking about doing a custom hack on mine and fitting a Yosh oval to it. I dunno. I like yours though!

The Yosh pipe is much louder than stock; sounds pretty good.  Much deeper tone.  Will definitely need to wear the earplugs on extended rides.

I kind of like the "coffee can" look of the WRX, though.  There is a lot of creativity on this board!

The WRX and the Yosh are such polar opposites...  Kinda freaking to look at one then the other...  The Yosh looks SOOOOOO small.

Yes I took the removable baffle out. It makes a big difference. I personally like loud bikes, but I'm glad I can reinstall the baffle for long rides or just because I want too. Plus when my parents come out here I expect my dad will want to ride the GS and my mom the ducs, and he would like it bettter if its not "ricer loud."

That link up there would not work for me.

Most friends that have heard the bike think it sounds awesome.

The beauty of the WRX can is the price.
I bought my carbon fiber can, and had it professionally installed all for around $70..

The melodic tone these things put out is amazing..

Love the WRX can!   :thumb:

Where is the gas leaking from?  Crankcase?  If you're leaking gas into the crankcase that may explain why it only runs on one cylinder occasionally.  Too much gas.  Maybe adjust your mixture screws and check float height.

Good luck!

Very nice Faxxxy, well done,

Actually I am trying to compensate for the lack of funds lately around here, which is why I chose the WRX route. I'm not out to make the "mighty GS" as i call it a beauty queen. Its my workhorse, and it does whatever to get the job done for me, and when working on it, I do whatever to get the job done on it.

As far as the leaky gas goes, I have figured out one of the sources, and that is the reserve side nipple on the gas tank petcock is loose or broken or whatever. I was gently pulling the hose off of the nipple, and the whole nipple just separated from the petcock and pulled out. Luckly I had the screw turned to off. Hopefully I can find someone on here who I can buy one from. If its not that, I think it may be a float bowl leaking, which is odd because it has brand new gaskets in it, and they don't look to be damaged at all. Possibly a warped bowl?  I think the left side engine cover is leaking some too. I guess I will have to get a gasket from the suzuki keeeeler here.

Well I just re read my post and it looks like the "work to the GS" is not done.  Hmmmm, is it ever?
