The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

Yeah, dirt riding will teach you a surprising amount about control, especially while sliding. That's one of the main reasons my dad had me ride dirt trails for a year. I still haven't gotten the whole stick your foot out and use it as a tripod thing, but that's because the trails we run are surrounded by trees and sticking your foot out wouldn't be a very wise idea. Once you get used to having the tail come out on you it can be loads of fun to slide around in the dirt. It's kinda like drifting, and it's VERY exciting.

I've crashed so many times while riding in the dirt. Thankfully I haven't gotten seriously injured, but it's been close at times. I was hauling ass (per usual) through these really tight trails surrounded by trees, and there was a turn that I, for some reason, didn't complete all the way through. I ran up onto the edge of the trail and then smacked into a tree. Thankfully I wasn't going as fast as I started, so only my handlebar hit the tree, pinching my fingers between the lever and the bar. I also tried going on a small motocross track (which my bike is NOT made for. It was a 1980 dual-sport. The suspension is as soft as the GS's) and I hit a jump and the front end decided it wanted to stay up, rather than coming down, so I landed back first onto the ground, with the bike landing on the rear wheel, then the side, then both wheels, then the side again. Both I and the bike survived, but the bike suffered a bent shift lever. Fixed that a bit later and went out to tear up the trails again.

Also, if you haven't tried it yet, find a big open field and run figure-8s, flat track style. It's SOOOOO much fun.
