Hey guys, I gladly will shre some useful hints:

- No need to take off carbs nor chain tensioner.
- Gas tank off, and side covers and seat,
- Close gas tank valve from right side with long narrow flat screwdriver.
- Remove gas hoses with pliers and pull away the tank, empty tank helps.
- Remove valve cover with 5 or 6 mm allen key
- The special tool presses down valve bucket by the edge, allowing the shim to be taken off, works like a cam on the bucket. Otherwise a large screwdriver may help.
- Spin shim and try with nose pliers to take it off. Watch out to throw down the shim by the chain hole to the crankshaft. Cover it.
- If not enough room for extraction just loose a little bit cam bearings screws, the trick here is to thigt them back to 5 Kg-m??? not completely sure but will check,
- Toughest part is to retight the allen bolts with the large torquimeter head under the frame, it barely fits. A flexible extension and allen bits help.
- I guess thats all, a good feeler gauge is very convinient, and caliper or micrometer for precise measurements.

More help?? A six pack, patience and caution.

Check out Phae's GS FAQ site....my modest contribution was to compile into one place the research folks had done for making up one's own valve-adjustment kit (cuz I was putting enough miles on my GS to make it necessary to do a valve adjustment every 6 to 8 weeks). Tells ya' what parts to get and some places to get the parts!

I don't have the addie of the FAQ, but I'm sure someone will post it for ya'!

Davipu made some copies of that tool for a few bucks, really worthy. Don't remember who sells the original tool, but I probably saw it at www.motorcycle-superstore.com, I guess a valve compresor only clears the valve steam and locks while pusing down the bucket once the shim's off, the tool wraps around the camshaft, besides the cam and pushes the bucket by the edge like a cam.
