Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

I don't see why France *would* get involved. For one, they knew we could handle it. And for two, they did not want to poke their nose where it did not belong. We could not proove - and still can not - that this war was even justified. True, Saddam was a bad person and needed to be jousted. But was it our place to do so? Frances?  :dunno:
Richard died in a motorcycle accident that was at no fault of his own.  We lost a good friend and good member of this board.  Though Rich may be gone, his legacy will live on here.

( sorry i went on a rant but god this stuff is really staring to get to me )

I didn't support him when he said "Let's go to war." On the contrary, I thought he was a stupid f%$k, just as I do now.

well feared, if u are referring to 9/11 as the us's reason for going to war in iraq, i beg u to find the connection there.  look at the big picture and realize it is just to secure oil.  bush's reasoning was a pre-emptive strike to prevent them iraqi's from using their dreaded weapons of mass destruction which bush and rumsfeld were positive iraq had.  now that the country is all f@#$ed up, and no weapons were found, its kinda hard to put the pieces back together again.  in truth the servicemen out there are complaining cuz they get crap equipment, lack armor in humvess, and are getting killed for no reason.  its not that the us is trying to establish a democracy but rather keep a close eye on its oil imports ...

The thing is, Americans (a.k.a., "The People") did support the war.  Wholeheartedly.  Sure, some individuals were against the war, but in general after 9/11 The People wanted someone's head on a pike...and they didn't care who that head belonged to.  During the initial campaign (call it "invasion", "occupation", "liberation", whatever) there were people all around the office I was working in with maps of Iraq tracking the 3rd Armored Division as they moved through Iraq toward Baghdad...practically cheering them on.  There were news crews everywhere (have folks already forgotten David Bloom?) praising the work "liberating" the country.  After 9/11 The People were flocking to military recruiting offices (Pat Tillman, anyone?) to help out the cause.

So, while the government didn't "ask permission" to go to war, if they had asked The People they probably would have gotten all the support they needed.

Then The People started to find out that it wasn't as easy as that.  You're not done after two weeks of running through someone's country demolishing everything.  You've got to stick around and protect them afterward (now that you've destroyed their military, government, and infrastructure).  You've got to help them rebuild.  Bummer.

Then came the realization that there was no threat of weapons of mass destruction.  Wow...the Iraqi's weren't lying to the U.N. after all.  Why did we do this again?  Oh yeah:  terrorism.  Let's find out more about that...apparently by torturing people.  Hrm.  The People weren't to keen on that.  That makes us look...um...evil.  Didn't we toss Saddam because he was torturing people?  Isn't that a bad thing?

Oh yeah, and about that rebuilding thing...The People started hearing about lucrative government contracts to rebuild what we broke...not for just any government contractors, but the contractor that the Vice President used to run.  The People started to believe that this wasn't necessarily a stunning coincidence...that there might be other motives at play.

And wait a minute...our soldiers are being killed!  The People are none too pleased about that.  That's not supposed to happen, is it?  Didn't We win already?  (of course We did...We saw it on CNN.  Didn't We?)

So now, when it's not just some dotted lines and stylized explosions on a map on tv, but real American soldiers dying, people are wondering what the plan is (probably would have been good to ask that a while ago, but hey, nobody's perfect).  Turns out, there is no plan.  The People are really pissed off about this now.  They are starting to think that maybe this whole war thing wasn't such a good idea after all.

The truth of the matter is, regardless of the history of how we got into the situation, we can't just pull out.  Wrecking a country and then saying, "hey, you're on your own...enjoy all the freedom we gave you." isn't allowed.  Whether or not individuals now (or ever) supported the war is really irrelevant...it is what it is.

Alphamazing

Badger, that was one of the most truthful statements I've read in a long long time regarding the war. Thank you.

Quote from: FearedGS500i think what where doing is good .. your right .. its not our place to get in there area .. but when they invade us !
Not trying to diminish anything you say, but your profile shows that you live in Killeen.  Fort Hood, right?

As for your comments:

They didn't invade us.  There was no invasion, and even if it was an invasion, it wasn't "they" that did it.  We were subjected to a terrorist attack that did not originate from Iraq.  Many countries around the world deal with this all the time.  In many places it is just a fact of life that there will be a bombing every once in a while (ask anyone who lives in London).

Is what we are doing good?  I suppose that depends on your perspective.  I think that the majority of the soldiers are doing what they are doing because they feel they are doing good (best intentions, and all that).  Not many people are going to argue that Hussein was a nice guy, so you could argue that forcing him out was a good thing.  We are currently over there helping people (good thing), but a lot of what we are helping them with is dealing with their current conditions...caused by us being there.

There are other parts that are not so good...certainly we can't argue that torturing POW's is a good thing.  Even if one were to think that torture might be reasonable in some situations, it's hard to defend violating the Geneva Convention when we bandy it about in situations our our own interest.

Time will tell, of course.

I think that right now the thing that people are most pissed off about is not the war itself, but the way we were led into the war and the lack of a plan to lead us out.  It's the actions of our leadership (not the soldiers) that many find distasteful.

Bah.  I need to just let it go, before I start to sound like a lunatic.  Probably too late, huh?

So...who thinks the Colts will go 16-0?
