Corbin seat for 2001+

I had an email exchange with Corbin about getting them to do my 2001 and it didn't work. They said I need to bring it in so they can do their custom trip (same cost as the mail-order seats-$229). They won't recover the seat if I ship it, even though they have the pre-2001 version available. They also refuse to sell me the foam & cover for the pre-2001. Obviously they have plenty of business so they don't need mine.

So, now I'm thinking that I could have them ship the pre-2001, then I could simply remove their foam & cover, and modify it to fit the 2001 base. Does anyone think this is crazy?

Does anyone understand in detail what the differences are between the pre-and post-2001 GS500 seats, other than the obvious hump in front? Do they have the same base/attachment configuration?

The pre-2001 seat looks good, except for the tackle-crusher hump in front.

What do you think? Does anyone else want to try this first and let me know how it worked? I have about 4 months to play with before I de-winterize... Thanks!

I think you might be onto something, but I know little of the pre-2001 seats. I tried emailing Corbin and you got further than I did; they just ignored me. Rude. That made me not want to even buy from them, so I won't ever.

If you are good at upholstering, I don't see why you couldn't modify their materials. But then again, as long as you are ripping your seat apart, why not use a cheaper alternative?

I think there is more to a Corbin seat than just the INSIDE; I think their cover is superior quality too. You would be paying Corbin prices for cushier stock seat and doing the work yourself. Doesn't sound like a good deal to me.  :dunno:
Richard died in a motorcycle accident that was at no fault of his own.  We lost a good friend and good member of this board.  Though Rich may be gone, his legacy will live on here.

the best thing to do would be to get a measurement of pre 2001 seat. i've had both bikes...+01 seat is much wider...don't know about the length.

personally, i don't think it's going to work if you're thinking about using the padding and the cover. you can get a custom seat from someone else with that money.

Have you checked out the Sargent site?  I've heard good things.

The seat pans are quite different in shape.

If you're shipping, I'd send it to Rich's instead.  Nothing is going to be as good as a fitting in person, though.
