Another thing to take away from this is that the first (and generally only) cager response to a surprise sutuation is to slam on the brakes--usually at the worst time (when they are directly in the path of the most people).  Always be prepared to deal with the fact that they might stop dead right in front of you.

Out of curiosity...was the driver talking on their cell at the time?  Anyone placing bets?
