go ahead and run your guages but tape off the speedometer.  when i first started doing trackdays/racing i was told if you are too busy looking at the speedometer, you're too slow.  with the tac you can get comfy running in really high rpms.  it may seem awkward at first, but you get used to it.  once you are, youre ready for a 600

BTW, be careful out there.  ridesmart loves to overbook their events so you might just get bumped into level 2

On my trackday I taped over the speedo...did not want it distracting me.
Just go out and do what feels comfortable, as far as speed is concerned.

Will there be any kind of intro class? Other members showing you the ropes? That will help you out alot.

Keep the tach on.  I'd even add a shift light.

Is there any way to get a shift light on the GS?

Most generic shift light kits like most aftermarket tachs, have a lead which attaches to a spark plug condenser, which is how it gets its sensing of engine speed.

Keep the front fender on.
I got hit in the bottom of the jaw once by a pebble that got picked up and thrown thru the triple clamps at me.

Thank you James, that sounds good. I don't think I'll have enough time to install a shift light, but I'll survive.

Thanks for the info on the fender, I bet that hurt!

I've taken my GS to the track twice - lots of fun.  I'd suggest keeping the tach because I end up shifting later than on the streets.  On the streets, 8-9k rpm and I shift.  On the track, I'll go to 11+ if I'll only be there for a lil while.  Let us know how it goes.  My big complaint are the GS's pegs are so low causing too much scraping.
