Anyone catch "MTV's True Life: I Live to Ride"?

I thought it was pretty hilarious. Basically, it followed a bunch of squids preparing for some stunting competition in Florida. Most of them weren't wearing jackets or riding pants while performing some pretty dangerous stunts, some even on public streets. Other highlights included one guy commenting how annoying cagers doing the speed limit were when he was trying to stunt on highways with his riding posse. At the end it showed one of the guys had lost a finger trying to grab the chain of his bike....genius

i think i saw that like last year...

damn i sure hope i didn't get into riding at the wrong time. i keep on fearing that this is going to get out of hand and the government in going to step and screw everything up for everybody else. all due to some dumbasses who try to emulate other dumbasses.

ashman

 ya i saw that. the guy at the end goes, its all good. 4 up, one down. and folds down the finger hole on his glove where his finger would of gone.

Quote from: budget speed demonYou know what, I'm really sick of this whole "squids" stuff.  Everyone uses it and it seems that it can mean a million different things. I'm sick of everyone judging everyone else.
Thats a dumb argument. The term "retard" or "idiot" can mean a million different things too, and can be used in much the same way. Squid is just used colloquially to denote a dumb motorcyclist.

i don't want to start or really get into an argument, but i'm kinda with budget speed demon on this overuse of the S word.

i did see that show a while ago.
if i had to make a call on it? some of thoes guys i would call squidly, some i would not. (also remember that this is a TV show which was most likely selectively edited to add to it's entertainment value.)

many could easily call me a squid,
should i wear proper gear at all times, yes.
do i? no.
is stunting awesome, well at times it inspires awe in me, so in my opinion, yes.
is it relatively dangerous? yes.
do i want to lose a finger? no. very no.

just my 2 cents worth, i rarely voice my feelings on potentially argumentary topics like this, please take me lightly at all times.

btw budget speed demon, love the avatar

be careful, ride within your abilities. try not to harm others. and never forget to have fun, you only live/die once, might as well make it interesting.  :)
The final measure of any rider's skill is the inverse ratio of his preferred Traveling Speed to the number of bad scars on his body. It is that simple: If you ride fast and crash, you are a bad rider. And if you are a bad rider, you should not ride motorcycles.

wheelie, stoppie, repeat.
that's stunting

JakeD-getting your nipple pierced is not crazy. Killing a drifter to get an errection? Now that's crazy!

I think that guys that are into stunting can really ride.  I would never think of them as a squid.
You're telling me that a guy or girl that can ride a wheelie at about 3 miles per hour for a quarter of a mile can't ride?  Right.  Most of those guys have probably been riding since they were sixteen, tried racing, etc., and prefer to stunt.  I'm guessing that if somebody is willing to compete in a stunting competition, they probably have had a few "track days" in their past.

I totally respect what they do.  Would I ever do it? Nope.  Too old and I suck.  I'm the squid.  Not them.

jake, i once went to a local stunt show and witnessed a rider crash while attempting a wheelie. he wasn't wearing a helmet or jacket. i've heard he had injured his head pretty bad (what a shocker, huh?). now, he's a squid. fact is a lot of stunters are squids. i know some of them do wear full protection including a jacket but most of them are happy with wearing just a helmet.

just because you're an experienced rider, doesn't mean you can't be a squid. most squids behave as such because they know how to ride well. they don't wear protection because they think they're too good of rider to crash.

I think one of the qualifications for being a good rider is knowing that you need to wear all your gear all the time.

Steve McQueen was a good rider.  Did you see Great Escape?  He jumped a fence on an old dirt bike.  Their stuntmen couldn't do it good as he did so he had to put on a German uniform and do it again to complete the shot.  Guess what: That dude never wore gear.  I don't think wearing gear makes you a good rider and I don't think not wearing gear makes you a bad rider.
Gary Busey?  Bad rider, never wore gear.  Steve McQueen: good rider, never wore gear.

Your arguement has flaws.

right. wearing protection would make a sensible rider. otherwise, everybody here would be awesome riders cause we always wear protection, rihgt? ;)

but...no protection + stunting = squid

I agree - a skilled rider can still be a squid.

Stunting on public roads is the pinnacle of squid.  Stunting in a stunting venue is fun to watch, and some of those guys are indeed highly skilled.  A guy who does it without gear is still a squid.  There is always an element of chance in riding, even in a controlled arena like a stunt show.  To pretend your skills give you control over the laws of nature and the reality of chance is ridiculous.

But that is the difference beween and "ohhh" and an "ahhh".

Sometimes the stuners - performers - use take this gamble to increase their "ohh" factor. Kind of like the fire eaters! If it wasn't dangerous, it wouldn't be as fun to watch.

Is that stupid? Yeah, pretty much. But welcome to humanity. *sigh*

i've said more "ooohhh" and "aahhh"s watching this guy perform stunts than any super squids i've seen.

..and notice that he is wearing some kind of gear in just about every single shot.. even the ones where he is jumping over people NOT wearing any gear. This guy has been riding for years, and he most likley rides every single day. He built up to doing these things, he just did not jump on and    just go for it. All the stunts that he is doing are also in controlled environments with medical right there. That is a bit different from doing wheelies down the 405 in LA in traffic.

Check out ghostrider. That dude is NUTS, and even the things that HE does are semi controlled environments.

Jake D

Here is some coverage of the Championships last year.  Kansas City native Dan Jackson won it all.  All these guys HAVE to wear gear.  I guess it is a slight to them to say that "stunters are squids", but generalization are always way off base.
