GS idle issue

Hi, All. Well, the bike runs. After putting it down last fall and rebuilding it, it has been up and running for a few weeks. Buddha worked some magic on my carbs, I had a buy a bunch of parts from GS members (one of whom screwed me and claimed he needed to keep my money to feed his kid), and it took a hell of a long time, but she runs pretty well.

I do have one little issue that hopefully someone can help me troubleshoot. When I start the bike, I open the choke, press start, and it fires up. It will hang around 14-1500 rpm for a minute or two and then start to decrease RPMs. Over the course of the next minute or so, if I don't rev the engine, the motor will die. Once I've kept it running for 5-10 minutes by reving the engine or just getting on it and taking off, I can turn the choke off and the engine will hold 1400 rpm at idle just fine. In other words, during the first 10 minutes of the bike running, the engine tries to die, but after that it will hold its RPM just fine. Any thoughts?

my bike is in the same boat as yours, I even had a jet kid done and it still does it, I think it may just be part of the bike.

It seems like the choke is not working. with choke fully on it should go to 4k-5k rpm and not 1400 to 1500.. hell thats what my idle rpm is set to.

check fuel air mix, may be why idle stays there, give it a little gas and see if rpms go up and hang

mine idles at 1000-1100 rpm all day, never stalls. also mine only requires 1/4-1/2 choke when cold to idle at 1800, 1 or 2 min at 1800 and i turn off the choke and go no issues. BUT it only works this well after the 1) rejet and 2) 6* more timing. stock it was just like every one elses. morale of the story you ask? advance timing 4-6* (significantly helps idle and more power plus better gas mileage) then rejet (again better idle and more power but worse gas mileage)

Anyone still sell the advancer's for the GS500e? Haven't stumbled across one yet in my browsing...

they not make em anymore. Have you looked at the DIY ignition advance on the mods page?  I think i might doing that in a little bit if i cant fix my idle (and starting) problem.

I have. I've also done a similar mod on a couple of old hondas a few years back. I'm not a fan of the method, i prefer a ready to go advancer...

I did the DIY advance, although i did it a slightly different way before I knew there was a write up  on it. I took me less than 20 min with a rotozip. basically i just lengthened the pickup plate mounting holes so the plate could be turned ~4.5mm (6*) clockwise (i think, which ever way advanced it i cant remember now.) it made the idle increase a few hundred rpm and it idles so much better and goes off idle much better. and on the dyno there was approximately +.5 horsepower per degree of advancement. I would have gone further but I didnt have the rotozip at the dyno to lengthen them more.

I really want to throw in some colder plugs (i have stock heat range now) and  give it a few more degrees of timing
