Sorry all, I had the carbs apart way too many times and it still was starving at highway speeds. I just wanted to ride.  I quit smoking on Aug 31st after smoking 2.5 packs a day for 30 years. As a personal carrot to stay off the cigs on Sept 1st I took the GS500 to the dealer and traded it in on a 2003 VS800 Suzuki Intruder. 100.00 a month on the bike and I'm still saving another 140.00 a month. The shaft drive smoothness and torque are amazing. Also, I now can ride 6 to 8 hours and don't feel like theres a knife stabbing me between the shoulder blades.   Its a cool bike and fits me perfectly.
Thanks to all that have responded with info as I worked on the bike. If you want to consider a cruiser style bike that is a VTwin and fun to ride check out the Intruder, Boulevard.

PS. 12/14/05 today, 3 and a half months since I quit. I did the patch and took Welbutrin, didn't even want a cigarette. Drank lots of ice water when the urges hit, big frosty gulp/ breathe in, sensation really handles the craving.  After 2 weeks I stopped the patch and Welbutrin. Did fine. Only problem is about 15 lbs that I'll need to lose after the holidays. I cannot believe I waited this long to quit, I would have never thought it could be this easy.

Ogg: Not spear, caveman.

Congratulations on getting the monkey off your back.  It'll take a few months for your lungs to clear themselves out, but you will eventually stop coughing up crud in the mornings.

Hope you enjoy the new bike!

HOORAY!!

I always remember this one comic book I had of The Thing, Ben Grimm, the big orange guy of the Fantastic Four, vs. a galactic boxer and one of the frames has the Thing crawling across the canvas, after he'd been severly beaten, stating that he'll never give up. The willpower is what struck me the most.
I sure would like to have a copy of that mag again.
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

WTG!

I think riding is addiction enough to override all of the others.

Congrats on the bike, but most importantly congrats on quitting smoking. I quit over 9 months ago and it was the best thing I could have done for myself. Just remember don't even have a puff, because there's no need for it. You have quit, a non smoker doesn't have a need for a puff. And by taking that puff and realizing how nasty it tastes you will be lulled into a false sense of security becuase your mind will tell you that you can't get addicted again to something so nasty.

Well 3 years ago or so I quit for 5 month, not one puff, but then I would have an off cigarrette here and there when I was out partying and within 2 months I was back on a pack a day. I stayed that way for the next 2 something years. It's a tricky addiction.

You can't have an occasional cigarette, well maybe a very small majority of people can, but it's best to not find out.
