opossum...not good pets...lol

we raised 6 or 7 of these guys from when they were little pinkies.. so cute.  they would crawl all over you and hang by their tails off of your fingers.  when they got older we gave them to a 'shelter' that re-enters them into the wild after some de humanization.

Couple of things:

I'm really sort of drunk still from last night, but hearing the comparison between "coon bones" and dog bones kind of made me sick to my stomach.  

Eating animals suchs as opposum, racoons and dogs is a practice that shouldn't be discussed in mixed company.

You have possums in Michigan?   I thought they were a southern thang.   Vicious little farks, with teeth like razors.   Not good pets!   And, yes, some people in the south do EAT them.

Possums are doscile -at least the ones in the north east.  The only American marsupial.  Not particularly attractive, nor has a great personality.  But the one that lived in my back yard was there for years and never caused me a lick of touble.  Now the skunk on the other hand....

I encountered one many years ago that was flat ass vicious.......as vicious as any coon or DOG. He NEVER "played possum". We managed to get him into a burlap sack and took his ass to the house. He knew all along that that he was gonna be "on the menu"!! hahahahhaahhaa

On another note, at another time, I used to trap for awhile and I found one in my traps caught just by his toes. He was a savage creature. Growling hissing bloody hell. I skulled him with a pan (that I had in my backpack) several times and got him out of the trap and swung him by his hind legs into a tree and thought I'd crushed his skull. Well I put him in my knapsack and my buddy and I went home to practice my "skinning skills" (I was new to the art--still am).........anyway.......that little bastard came to LIFE when I pulled him out of my backpack and I had to fill up an old aquarium that was outside with water and I put on a leather glove and held him by the throat and choked him underwater for a LONG time before he stopped kicking. When I tried to put him "under the knife" he came to again and this time I held him under and pumped his chest while choking him.
My friend Wally said........"Wilson........if he didn't already have a broken foot.....I'd say we ought to let that mean little sonofabitch GO......"
He finally succumbed to unrelenting pressure but I'll always remember him. That was courage and tenacity and never giving up until the end.

I am actually a Deltan (flatlander) and not a "piney woods" type that speaks in a what YOU call a "hick twang". I have a deep melodious drawl that you probably couldn't understand either/anyway. However, and wherever we hail from in the Southern states, you can bet your life savings or last dollar that we........true........REAL Southerners (born and raised in the South and esp. the "deep" South )thank God each day that we are not from nor hold the values of the Jew York types and the bleeding heart New Englanders although there are some of our conservative brethren suffering in those states I'm sure.

Possums are cool, nasty looking, but cool.  They serve a purpose too, eating other dead things, that is why they end up roadkill a lot of the time.  They are eating old roadkill and become new roadkill.
