Torque and info for belt drive ...

I've looked around and can't find the average torque, or the highest torque that the gs500 puts out if you really get on it. Does anyone know where i can find this out? I'm sure theres a formula to figure this out.

think its around 27 or 29 ftpounds if i remember correctly from when i had mine dynoed

or try looking it up on www.bikez.com they got every bike listed too

I'm looking in to A belt drive for my bike. They have less stretch then a chain, and I think they are safer. what do you guys think?

Maximum torque......30.4 lbf (41.2 Nm) @ 7500 rpm

Some sort of custom set up?  Or did you find . . . of all things. . . aftermarket parts for the GS 500???? :)

A belt would probably be safer in the event of breakage.

It would be a custom thing. I'm looking at Gates Poly Chain GT2 belt, With the torque that was given to me from earler posts, I know the style of belt would work. And what I have found so far is that a 1 inch wide belt should fit. But until i get in there and start fitting things together I won't know for sure. I'll let you know.

Assuming that the front and rear sprockets are standard, and that the engine peaks at 30.4 lbf:

Torque at the rear wheel, max developed: 495 lbf.

Torque at the transmission sprocket, max developed:  203 lbf.

From the manual:

Primary reduction:  2.714

1st gear:  2.461

Final drive:  2.437

Therefore, the ratio through the transmission is 1:16.277
Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

why would you want to convert it to a belt? your chains not gonna break unless its super old and worn out. get yourself a nice high end chain and be done with it. just take care of your chain and your chain will take care of you.

Belts are zero maintanance, quiet and cleaner.

However, you won't get a belt on a GS500.  Why?  Because the frame, swingarm, and motor mounts are all in the way.

According to Suzuki, the GS500 puts out 29.5ft/lbs at 7500rpm.

According to Jan. '06 issue of Motorcycle Consumer News the GS500F tested 7/'05 has a rear-wheel torque of 25.6(lb. ft.).

Hey to have gotten me interested ... you needed to have put belt drive in the title of the post ...
Here is what I got ...
You's ahve to run an 8mm ptich belt, not 14. The 14's are not available in under 36 tooth I believe and that will be too large to fit in the front ... whatever it is ... 4.9 inch diameter how many ever tooth ... That will hit the clutch push rod ...
Now a 8mm will work just fine in the 20mm width and the rear will not be a problem at all, neither will the frame ... cos the chain is almost wider than the belt, and a chain moves sideways more than a belt will ...
The front pulley will be what you need to get ... and securing it on the countershaft will be tough ... why ... the sprokets are narrower than pulleys ... and we have the freaking clip to hold it, you cannot hold a fatter pulley with a clip, need a nut ot bolt, and there is your first problem ... drilling and tapping your countershaft ... Once you get that part done ... There is smooth sailing ...
There is a company in Zebulon NC called scootworks (talked to them plenty last year or so ...) and they make belt drives for a Vulcan 800 and a Marauder 800 which BTW are 21mm wide 14mm pitch I believe, but they have made 8mm's also ... Buy a front pulley for either of the 2 bikes from them with the 8mm pitch ... and booya ... all you need is the rear, whihc is a garden variety off the shelf item from any power transmission dealer ...
A belt will carry the load ... easy ... Remember ... before it will break ... it will skip teeth, you will have to run it tighter ... and then it will shear its teeth off if its still over loaded. A belt will be limited by how tight you can turn it and that in fact also determines the load it will take ... in effect a 14 will take more per tooth, but there is fewer teeth ... whatever ... get the info and stuff you need ... I'll see if I can help you some more from my past research ... BTW a long travel suspension will be more critical to a belt than a chian, and you'd mainly have to get it tightened up by running Katana shock or somehting.
