Woopsy, Fuel question

OK, I rode to work this morning and for some reason, I decided, hey I need to check my petcock and make sure it is not on prime since I've been jacking with it over the weekend. Well, I'll be damned it was set to prime, I turned to to the ON position that it should be in and it ran (idled) fine.  Once I got on the throttle it sputtered and died on me.
I let it set for a few minutes and with it in ON it would start up but run like crap, as soon as I gave it any gas it would sputter and die.  If I leave it in Prime, it runs fine.
What gives?  Could I now all of a sudden have a clogged fuel line?

Has the petcock/fuel system ever been serviced by you or anyone else? Something I see sometimes on this board is the fuel hoses hooked up improperly, so that "on" is really "off" or "prime", etc. I don't have a bike to go outside and play with, but I'm sure you can search and find more info, or some of the more knowledgeable members will chime in soon, I'm sure. Good luck!

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

mine did that shortly after i painted my tank on my honda (with the petcock removed) and i checked the hoses which was my first guess but then i realized it had sprung a leak when in the on position, so i had to service it anyway and replace the washer in it. when i got it open it had gotten clogged and all i had to do was clean out the petcock itself and reassemble it. its worth a try.

I think because the fuel selector vacuum diaphragm hasn't been moving for a while and it's stuck. Smack it with the butt end of a screwdriver to loosen it up. And, make sure the vacuum line is hooked up between the carb and the fuel selector.

Well, none of the hoses have been removed in at least a year.  I did change out the starter this weekend.  Maybe I snagged a fuel line.  I'll check and make sure I didn't pull anything out with my big clumsy hands.

you could just possibly be below the "on" level.  try switching it to "res" becuase it pulles from the lowest point on the petcock like the "prime" setting.  the bike will idle fine with low gas for a little bit but once you try to gas it, the engine sputters.

Well i played with it last night and noticed one of the fuel lines to the fuel selector was pinched, I pulled it loose and tried riding around on it for a mile or 2 in the on position and it ran fine.
This morning, I start heading to work and get about half a mile down the road and it starts to loose power and sputter.  This time I couldn't even start it.  I put it on reserve and no dice.  I checked the gas and I have half a tank.  I put it on prime and it fired right up.  I took it back home and drove the cage to work on this gorgeous day :(

I guess, it's time to rebuild the fuel system in the bike.

Check that you haven't popped the vacum line off the back of the petcock when freeing the trapped fuel line.
They run right next to each other and I have done this before when refitting my tank.

Checked the vaccum line and it's ok. I went a head and replaced all the fuel lines and put new clamps on them.
Still no dice.

Stupid moment, I then decided that maybe I shoud check the diverter in the petcock. So I unclamped the selctor arm and it came off and so did the spring under neath it and the diverter itself. Woops, someone forgot to turn off the gas at the tank.

My problem now is, the diverter and a cone shaped object with 2 holes in it.  I need to figure out which way this goes in and which way the selector goes back on in corisponding fasion.  I guess if I can't get thius one figured out I'll just get a T-coupler and bypass the stupid thing all together.
