This 18yr old has crotch-rocket envy and thinks they can start off on a VFR-800 as their first bike!

All the torque of a crotch rocket and all the weight of a cruiser.....  taking all bets on when & how he drops/crashes it first!

I was 23 when I had a cg125 and I was a nutter on that, I don't think being just 18 and getting a vfr800 as your first bike is a very good idea. He may be o.k but being a newbie you are not safe to use that much power so why not get a small cheap bike to use for 6-12 months.

I know someone who just purchased an 02' Kawasaki ZX-9R as his first bike... Early 20's and hasn't taken the MSF course. Says he'll be OK because he's been driving dirt bikes and 4 wheelers his entire life. I gave my 2c, but it only goes so far.

You can start off on a supersport if you ride like a grandma.  That's not hard at all.

I started on a KZ750... It took a couple months for me to drop it the first time, in a parking lot.

dirtbike experience i think greatly increases your skills on a streetbike.

It does, but do you start out dirt riding on a CR500/RM500?

I've got a friend that started on a VFR1000. He couldn't get it through the cones doing the DMV test. Another guy let him borrow his Rebel 250 to get the endorsement.

I started out on a CR250 and downgraded to a 125...couldnt imagine what a 500 is like

But yea starting off on a 800cc bike is probably not the smartest idea.
