What's the best technique to get the 500 up on one? I know of many, just looking for another opinion.

This is like the 4000th wheelie post, so a search might give you everything you need to know.

But mostly you need high revs and a dump of the clutch.  I've never done this but most report that they rev between 5000 and 6000 RPM while rolling along at about 5 mph and then let the clutch out.

Wheelying is bad for your motor.  Usually, it deprives the motor of oil, which ain't good.  But if you decide to try it, you better be careful.  It can be dangerous too.

One guy can roll on the throttle and wheelie but he has to "bounce on the forks."

Just try searching this board and you'll see all the pros and cons.

My bike will power wheelie..but i dont weigh anythign and i wind it right nup and have a 15t sprocket and a bunch of mods...

Its bad for the forks too...if u want to wheelie get a beater dirtbike or a wrecked stunter I4...

Just take the rear wheel off and it'll feel like you're always busting a fat wheelie.   :thumb:

It's pretty much a waste of time. Get a 91 Ninja that looks like shaZam! and may have been dumped. Practice on that in a parking lot or your own property. The GS is not made for that and it will take a lot of effort to get it up.

I'm not shaZam!-talking you trying to wheelie; I watch the videos and think it looks sweet too. But the GS isn't the bike for it. Get an R6; you won't be able NOT to wheelie.  ;)

you guys must be full of shaZam!, i got many mods, and my gs500f will wheelie right from a take off!!! Mind you i do a bit of drag racing at the strip!! But our group Ruztico riderz are stuntbikers, and my gs500f is a blast to play with, clutch in first or second will pick it straight up in the air, and also just by cracking on her around 10mph will pull you right on your back, i'm gonna get the wife to take some pics of me and i will post them!!

Mine is modded too and will do it...but thats not the point. The gs isnt built to be able to take that kind of abuse stock. An I4 can take it because if you're riding them the way they are designed to be ridden, you cant avoid it. Plus they know people are stupid and will do it on the street too. Without the mods, youre asking for trouble.

you can wheelie a 70's moped if you wanted to. mine doesnt like it too much, it takes abit of effort to achive it.
Accelerate like your being chased, Corner like you mean it, Brake as if you life depends on it.
Ride Hard...or go home.

i have a NON mod gs500f and i stand it up pretty easy . with out much effort .. you just have to get the right rpm range

rangerbrown

i can power wheely 1,2,and 3

no not realy but i can get it up in first but cant hold it.

I can wheelie on an 80cc dirtbike...i was mainly asking cause i can slightly get it up on one wheel by just doing the rev high, chop throttle, wot in 2nd, my gs is stock...I know i could do it by clutching, but i know that's bad for the clutch. Wheelies are cool. Thanks for all the replies, and thanks for not giving me a preach/bash session for asking :)

With my fully stock bike I could pull up wheelies in first.(as seen in pic<<<<<<)
Basically the same old- ride along at 5-10 km/h, pull in the clutch, pull back on the throttle building revs quickly, then just dump the clutch and hold on.

There are some tricks though. First one is, if you want to carry the wheelie for a while, you need to keep twisting the throttle as the front wheel is lifting. if you just rev it up and pop the clutch, and then roll off the throttle as the wheel comes up, the front wheel will go way up, and then come slamming back down, usually busting fork seals and aiding in breaking the old speedo cable. (well that's how I broke my speedo cable.) What you need to do is roll along, pull in the clutch, twist the throttle building revs, pop the clutch, then as it comes up, roll off the throttle just a little, and right when it gets to the point where the front wheel has hit its highest point, you twist the throttle to completely, or almost completely open. This will carry the wheelie until you hit the rev limiter in first gear.

The best thing to know is that when learning to wheelie, START SMALL, and GO SLOW. I honestly cannot stress this enough. Even if you want to go super big and you think you can do it right off the start, DON'T! You're going to hurt yourself, and worse yet, your purdy bike. Slowly build up your confidence and skill and eventually you can go bigger and slower. (doing slow wheelies is actually much harder than doing fast ones) when you get better you can try stand ups, or shifting gears while riding out a wheelie.

I have a very short video of me doing a first gear wheelie on my GS. If anyone's interested I'll post it up. Its actually the video that my pic is captured from.

The other thing to know is that just for even thinking about doing a wheelie, there are those that will call you a squid. Personally, I don't like judging people with the whole "squid" thing, but I think you're pretty dumb if you're doing wheelies on the street. Keep it to deserted cul-de-sacs and parking lots. So just be prepared to get called a squid by people, even if you're being safe.

Also note that this info is for use on the GS500 ONLY! If you try this method on a modern 600 or anything else with more than 40hp, you'll end up on your A$$.

I think I had more stuff I wanted to add, but I can't remember it anymore, so I'll post it up if I think of it.

Wheelies...  Yeah...  A stock GS... STOCK...  Can do wheelies.

Do what I did... Here's the trick...  Ride around until you're used to your clutch, then adjust it so the action is all at the end.  While you're out riding trying to get used to the new adjustment, find some crazy chick (that was just yelling profanities at you with her little kids in the car) and race her away from a light...  100% guaranteed wheelie. :thumb:

But, really...  Learn to whip the twisties and leave the tricks to the crash jockeys (or get a junker to trick on).

melloGS

leave the tricks to crash jockeys...why not then say, leave whipping the twisties to moto GP racers... :icon_twisted: ;)

Stunting is really rather bad for your moto...  Wheelies cause the oil to roll back and away from the pump, causing your engine to be starved of oil...  Then landing it is hard on the already crappy front shocks and may actually screw up your front end...  Not to mention the higher chances of crashing and totally screwing up your bike.

Pushing your own riding limits in the twisties isn't going to push the limits of the GS...  You might be able to push the limits of the GS on a track, but you'd have to be a damn good rider...  Then you could go get a race bike and race for years before you could push the limits of that bike.

The GS is a medium sized, low priced bike with the heart of a racer...  It was made to be flipped in the twisties...  :thumb:

But, it wasn't made to be up on one (even though you can do it).  :dunno_white:

If you really want to wheellie, you can clutch it up pretty easily...  Even stock, but especially with a 15T or 14T front sprocket, pipe, rejet, and K&N.

Well actually the GS was made to be a cheap reliable daily driver, not a stunt bike, or a track demon, but its quite proficient at them both.
