stupid wiring q? need a quick answer please

i put new blinkers on this weekend.  They worked.

I hooked the green wire from the new blinkers into the black with white stripe one and put the black wire from the new blinkers into the black one.

well I went down and just tried it and it works both ways. Same blink rate and brightness no matter how they were connected. oh well

Now if somebody could splain to me why the wires are so short!  My new blinkers (and the ones I took off  were about a 1/4 of an inch to short to fully connect.  I had to splice some wire into the middle.  What a pain.

If you were using front blinkers on the rear.  Front blinkers usually don't have to be very long to get to the headlamp housing, while the rear turnsignals have a way to go.

Yes, they are just normal bulbs so will work both ways.

I found that the LP turn signals I have did have short wires...  The wires are fully stretched to the wiring harness.  On the F models, there is a clip on the inside of the fairing, but with the aftermarket signals, in order to clip the wire back in, you have to splice.

Just to set the record straight:

The black-white wires from the harness are ground.

The black (left side) and green (right side) wires from the harness are switched (by the turn signal relay) battery voltage (12V).

So the black-white wires from the lights should be connected to the black-white wires at the harness.

(To be absolutely safe, the new turn signal lights should be tested to determine if one of the wires is grounded to it's mounting bracket and therefore grounded to the bike frame.)

The black wire from each right side turn signal should connect to a green wire.

The black wire from each left side turn signal should connect to a black wire.

This is all in agreement with the GS500 wiring diagram.

It also sounds to me like someone has performed the usual signal exchange that happens with these bikes. The wiring colors of aftermarkets usually are only black and red or black and white.

From an electron's perspective, they don't care about the color of the insulation. On the other hand, the next person working on the bike will get confused if they try to track down a problem.
