What is the upper fender for?  since the wheel fender is there, I don't see a way for rocks or anything to fly up.  I've been riding my '04 without that part for a couple months now, no problems...

Are you talking about the fairing?  Otherwise known as bodywork.  Plastics.  Uppers and lowers.
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

Nyet. He means the little black plastic flap that goes under the upper fairing.

Ah.  Since I don't own an '04 and not readily familiar with them, if it is like any other fully-faired bike, it's probably just to keep things clean of roadgrime and bugs.

Alpha is correct.  Although I haven't seen much of a difference riding without the piece...  I'm probably getting more MPH, since I'm saving about .001 pounds...
