Another lurker comes out of the shadows........

I have been using this site for about 6 months.  Here is some bike info about me.

I took the MSF course last Oct and bought a 04 GS500F last Dec with 4K miles on it.
I am the third owner, the previous owner got the bike with about 1K miles on it, and did an oil change at the dealer.

Since it getting warmer I am now getting it prep up.

Today I tried to do an oil change. I manage to drain the oil but I can not get the oil cap off the bike.  It seams like it is frozen, I tried to tap it with a hammer to get it off.

For now I just filled oil back it and put back the oil cap nuts back and retighten them.

So now I have new oil and an old oil filter in the bike.  I am guessing maybe the filter has never ever been changed and sealant is holding it on.

Any ideas on getting a stuck oil cap off the bike?

Welcome to this grate site!

By "oil cap" I guess you mean the oil filler/dip stick on the right side of the engine right?

Put a rag between the jaws of a pair of plyers and the oil cap "ridge" and use that to torque it loose. The rag will keep the teeth of the plyers from scaring the cap.  Dip sticks often get stuck on GSs because of heat cycles of the metal and plastic. Just remember that you don't have to re-tighten it super tight next time.

A less than 2 year old bike with 4K miles on it is fine with new oil and the old filter, assuming that the original one was changed at the break-in service.

I assumed he was talking about the filter cover  :dunno_white:  If so, once the three nuts are off, try fitting a long thin screwdriver under the edge to gently lever it off.  Tapping around the circumference with a rubber mallet might help free the gasket, if frozen.

Sorry about the confusion.

The oil cap that holds that holds the oil filter with three nuts is stuck.

I do take off the three nuts with no problem but the cap still sticks to the block.

Since there is new oil in the engine I guess I can wait for a while for the next oil change and take it to the dealer if I can not get the cap off.

Thanks
