Hi,
Got on my suzuki gs 500e this morning here in the uk and pushed the starter button and nothing , looked at the dash i see green nutrual light lit also red oil light lit, but nothing from starter, also no lights working, no horn, no indicaters, all these used to work with just the key in and truned, strange they not working now :icon_confused:, checked the fuse thats ok, its weired, any one got any ideas, must be somthing to do with the electrics under the seat maybe, so now i naffed off can't take the baby out for  ride in this nice weather here in the uk!
I konw there are some other black electricel boxes under the seat to the side of the bike, has one of these gone, how do i start to look for faults, any ideas to what i should test first, any help would be great, please help asap, need to get out in this nice weather, thanks for your time.

Have you checked the battery, especially to be sure the cable bolts and connections are tight? Look at the level of the electrolyte; if it is low in any cell, fill the cell to cover the internal plates with DISTILLED water, then charge the battery on a MOTORCYCLE battery charger before you use it again.

Can you bump-start it? Put it in second gear with the key "ON", pull in the clutch, push it to get it rolling, then pop the clutch (be ready to pull it back in right away) to see if it will fire, or at least TRY to fire. Do this from the left side (kickstand side) of the bike; do not stand on the right side. If you've never done this before, it will be easier if you have someone else help you push the bike.

Well, Dave.  So you have indiicator lights (Neutral & Low Pressure) but no headlight/taillight?  Wierd.

Suggest you should start with the basics.

  • As Cal asks, "How's the battery?"  Are you sure it's charged up and can deliver?  It's possible to have enough battery power to show indicators but not enough to engage the Starter Relay.  (But lack of head/tail lights is unusual.)
  • Assuming the battery is fine, you're pulling in the Clutch, right?  The starting circuit requires the clutch in, gear in neutral, kill switch in the ON position, Key in the ON position before the Starter button will be useful.
  • If the above is okay, then it's probably Multimeter time.  I'd suggest getting as Clymer or Hayes manual that gives the electrical circuit diagram.  RED, ORANGE and YELLOW wires tend to carry the power.  Without a wiring diagram I would think it best to take the bike to a dealer 'cuz I'd get lost otherwise.

Poke around and let us know if you find some answer.  Oh, and sometimes banging things works.   :)

It could be your Starter interlocks circuit. If you can read a schematic, GSTwin member John Bates has a simplified starter circuit schematic HERE.

Look it over and let us know.

The side stand switch, clutch switch, neutral switch, and sidestand relay all contribute to the starter operation.

Sounds like a typical starter relay problem.  Follow the positive cable to where it forks and that will lead to the likely culprit.  Easy component to replace, or can be pried apart so contacts can be filed smooth.

I had the exact same problem last week.  There are two wires that attach to the negative battery terminal.  One is the frame ground.  The other is a black-and-white ground wire which is returning from most of the electrical system.  If that wire is not connected, all you will have is the neutral light and the oil pressure light (because they are gounded to the frame and do not send a ground wire back to the battery).

It should be a 3-6 inch wire attached to a plastic plug that connects it to two other wires of the same color.  It should be right behind the battery.  It may also be that that plug has come undone.

Hi Guys,
Problem is now sorted, big thankyou to Admiral Crunch for pointing me in the right direction, it was a rusty, dirty earth from the battery  conection, thin black and white earth wire, cleaned this and lights worked, horn, indicators ect, also a dry soldier joint on one of of the terminals on the starter Solenoid, now starts everytime, re-soldiered the terminal!  :thumb:
Bike is now running sweet and starting everytime, big thanks to the guys who posted replys to my problem  great web site and very help full fellow suzuki gs riders.
