Steering head loose?

I first noticed while braking that my GS acts like my old mountain bike did when the stem was loose. The GS's front end moves back towards me when I hit the front brakes like something isn't clamped in the front end. When I got home I got the front end off the ground, and I grabbed the fork tubes. I could move them back and forth about 1/4" like something was loose. I know my triple clamp bolt is on tight, so that must not be it.

Does this make sense, and if so can someone make a suggestion?

steering stem bearings loose or wasted -internal fork bushings could be worn also

How do you check the steering stem bearings and bushings? Sounds like that is what it is Also how can you get to them, what tightens them down?

I dont remember on the gs but on my 600rr you have to take off the top triple to actually get to the nut for the steering head. the bolt above the top triple on my RR only tightens the top triple down. check ronayers.com for a exploded diagram of the asembly or check your service manual (clymers or haynes). If you dont have one already, get one. They're indispensable.
