Living up to my title

So I've been messing with the jetting a lot recently, trying to get a decent butt dyno down before I go dyno tune her and get it perfect. I recently installed Mikuni Large Round 135 main jets, the ones with the extra large head on them, rather than the small one.

So I warmed the bike up today and began to rode off and noticed it was kicking and fighting and backfiring on me. Giving me all holy hell. It cleared up after a while though, so I ignored it, it was cold afterall. Making my way out of campus and threw the neighborhoods heading to the highway to get back to my house the bike started to surge a little bit when it got to the upper revs and then cut off and went back to the mid range happiness. Well, as soon as I got to the highway and revved her up to get on it started to sputter and die on me. I rung it to WOT and tried to keep the revs up, but to no avail. I reached back and switched the petcock to PRI, as I had done before when I had this problem (jetting issues, forgot to hook up the vacuum line to the petcock) and it solved my problem.

So I get home and try and figure out what happened. I had fuel in there, so that was okay. I figure dit had to be a pinched vacuum line somewhere, be it from the tank or from the carbs to the petcock. So I pulled the tank off and began rerouting hoses and stuff so I could eliminate my problems. So after fixing all that I rode around the neighborhood, but had the same problem! It was starting to piss me off, basically, and I was getting extra frustrated. I pulled over into a gas station to see if I could do anything there, and filled up just for the hell of it.

You know what my problem was? I ran out of gas and needed to switch it to reserve.

Damn I'm stupid.

i've had quite a few of the "oops left the petcock turned off after fiddling with carbs" now before i throw a leg over it after wrenching i make sure i leave the "bodywork" off the back and keep a flathead and a 12mm with me. saves me the time of pushing the bike home to get the tools.

glad your problem was easily fixxed, and that you made it to the gas station before it really ran out.

Yeah, but I mean, it's just such a "DUH!!" solution. First thing you do when it starts bucking and dieing on you like that? Reach back ad click it over to Reserve. I guess I'm just so used to filling up before needing to switch over, being so used to filling it at the 200 mile mark and not taking into account the decrease in fuel economy from the new filter. And I'm used to just forgetting to do something when I wrench!

When I read "Living up to my title", I mistakenly thought "Living up to my screen name".  The first thing that popped into my head was that your bike caught on fire (Alfafire).  :o  I'm glad you're just stupid.   :icon_lol:

Alright, well, how about this: if my bike ever catches on fire I'll be sure to make a clear topic title indicating so and post plenty of pictures.  :icon_lol:

  I was thinking that when I first started reading the story.

I had a near-stupid the other day...  I was messing with my trip knob and messed up my Gas Tracking mileage...  But, I figured screw it I'll just wait until I hit reserve...  Well, it turns out that I was still set to reserve after the last time I got gas...  I was just leave the store and about to hop on the freeway for the 20 mile trip home when I thought to myself...  "Gee...  I sure hope I'm not on reserve already."  I checked and I was...  So, I set it back to ON and let it idle for a while... No prob.

I rode off and *sput* *sput* *sput* I didn't even make it 20 feet before I need to switch back to RES...  I got gas and put 4.6 Gallons in the tank. :o  Silly Boy!

Wasn't his title "Sir Crash-a-lot" for a while?  I was worried about his bike for a second.

No no, "Sir-Crash-a-Lot was my custom text, not my title. My title has either been "Can't do simple math" from the old board or "Damn I'm Stupid" now.

On a happier note, I didn't run out of gas today. :)
